NOTE: Front axle removed for better photographic illustration
1. Loosen nut, but do not remove from the tie rod.
2. Use Tooling (A) to loosen the ball joint end of the left hand tie rod (2) from steering housing (1), but do not separate. Repeat step 2 for the right hand tie rod. Separate right hand tie rod (2) from the steering housing (1).
3. Use Tooling (B) to heat the joint between steering cylinder rod (3) and rod assembly (4) of the right hand tie rod to loosen the thread lock.
4. Use a wrench to hold steering cylinder rod (3) and using Tooling (C) separate right hand tie rod (2) from steering cylinder rod (3).
5. Using Tooling (C) on rod assembly (4) turn steering cylinder rod (3) counterclockwise and separate left hand tie rod (2) from steering cylinder rod (3). Remove nut from tie rod (2) and separate from the steering housing.
NOTE: The following steps are for the installation of the tie rods.
6. For installation make sure the threads in both ends of steering cylinder rod (4) are thoroughly clean prior to installation of the tie rods.
7. Apply 9S-3263 Thread Lock on the threads of rod assembly (4) of the left hand tie rod. Install left hand tie rod (2) in steering cylinder rod (3). While holding the steering cylinder rod in position with Tool (C), tighten the left hand tie rod to a torque of 300 N·m (220 lb ft). Make sure the ball joint end of the tie rod is in proper alignment with the steering housing. Temporarily install the ball joint end of the left hand tie rod in the steering housing.
8. Repeat step 7 for the right hand tie rod.
9. Install new self-locking nut on the ball joint end of each tie rod. Tighten the nuts to a torque of 165 N·m (120 lb ft).
