Different Discs And Thrower Used In Flywheel Clutch Group To Prevent Damage From Heat{3052}

Usage:

140B Motor Graders

Reference: "Three-Disc Flywheel Clutch Now Used," June 28, 1982 Service Magazine, page 4.

Description of Change: The reference article announced a three-disc clutch for 140B Motor Graders. This new three-disc clutch has a higher load capacity than the former two-disc clutch. This change was made to increase the service life of the clutch.

There have been reports of distortion of the 7D5651 Discs after the conversion to the three-disc clutch. Analysis of the problem has shown that the distortion was caused by heat which is the result of friction between the discs and the disc assemblies.

For this reason, new discs, a different oil thrower and the necessary hardware to install the thrower are used in the flywheel clutch group.

The new discs are thicker than the former discs for better resistance to heat distortion. The new oil thrower is made of thicker steel than the former oil thrower, and it is held in position by six bolts. The former thrower was held in place by three bolts. The increased thickness of the thrower and the extra mounting bolts will make the thrower more rigid. This will result in better distribution of oil to keep the clutch components cool.

Adaptable To: The new parts can be installed in place of the former parts as shown in the chart if the necessary modifications are made. These modifications are given under "Installation Of Three-Disc Clutch Groups." The new parts are in effect with Serial Numbers 33C208 and 61S1036, including 61S875-61S882, 61S928, 61S930, 61S932, 61S934, 61S943, 61S949, 61S958-61S960, 61S964-61S973, 61S977, 61S980-61S983, 61S989-61S1004, 61S1009-61S1015, and 61S1024-61S1033.

Installation of three-disc clutch groups

Modification of the flywheel and the 6D2518 Clutch Release Adjusting Screw is necessary for installation of the new parts. Three additional holes must be drilled and tapped in the flywheel for installation of the 2Y7327 Oil Thrower, the S509 Bolts and the 3B4506 Lockwashers. Figure 1 shows this modification. The new thrower should be used as a template for the hole locations. The clutch release adjusting screw needs to be shortened to prevent contact with the shaft. Figure 2 shows the screw modification.

During installation of the new parts, use the Service Manual and Special Instruction, SMHS731-01, "Installation Flywheel Clutch Groups On Direct Motor Graders," as references. Also, use the service information which follows.

Put some liquid gasket between the oil thrower and the flywheel. This will help keep the oil in the area of the discs.

After the new components are installed, engage the high-low clutch lever and adjust the clutch. Figure 3 shows the correct adjustment dimensions. Check the clutch adjustment after 15, 50 and 250 SMU to make sure that it has not changed.
