New Shims Available To Make Drawbar Wear Strips Level{6153}

Usage:

All Caterpillar Motor Graders

Reference: Service Magazine, August 25, 1980, Pages 6 and 7. In this article you were told of new 6G4524 Wear Strips which are used between the circle and drawbar. You were also told that the procedure to install the new wear strips on all Caterpillar Motor Graders is in Special Instruction, "Modification and Installation of Drawbar and Yoke Assemblies," Form SMHS7185-01.

New 5T4749 Shims are available to use between the drawbar and the 6G4524 Wear Strips on all Caterpillar Motor Graders. These shims are 0.76 mm (.030") thick. Up to two of the new shims can be used as needed to keep all the wear strips level and in even contact with the circle. This will give maximum service life for the wear strips.

Before the wear strips and new shims are installed the drawbar must be made as straight as possible. With use, the drawbar can become bent a small amount. Our recommendation is to make the drawbar flat, with a maximum tolerance of 3.2 mm (.125"), and install the new shims if needed. A maximum tolerance of 1.5 mm (.060") is permitted for alignment of the wear strip surfaces around the circle. This tolerance will give even contact of the wear strips on the circle.

Special Instruction, Form SMHS7185-02 has complete instruction for the installation of the new shims.
