Added Methods To Decrease The Effects Of High Sulfur Fuels{1355,1280,1318,1000}

Usage:

All 3400 Series Engines

SUPPLEMENT: 01/10/83

SERVICE MAGAZINE, AUGUST 30, 1982, PAGE 4. In the article "Added Methods to Decrease The Effects Of High Sulfur Fuels" a change must be made to the last sentence. Change that sentence to read as follows: "In areas where the sulfur content in the fuel is greater than 1.5% by weight and oil with a TBN value of 30 is not available, use a CD performance oil with the highest available TBN value and decrease the oil change periods. Check the condition of the oil and the engine with Scheduled Oil Sampling.

Reference: "Lubricant Recommendations Changed For All Caterpillar Engines To Combat Effects Of Fuel Sulfur," on Pages 5-7 in the May 3, 1982 Service Magazine.

The reference article has recommendations on how to decrease the effects of high sulfur fuels through the use of oil with the correct TBN value. The Engine Manufacturers Association's "Lubricating Oils Data Book For Heavy Duty Automotive and Industrial Engines" which is available from Caterpillar by Form No. SEBU5939 has the TBN value for several types of oils. Maintenance of a higher minimum operating temperature will also decrease some of the effects of high sulfur fuels.

With a higher jacket water temperature, less condensation will take place in the engine. This means less sulfuric acid will form and the corrosive wear of the internal parts will be decreased. To get a higher jacket water temperature it is necessary to use a water temperature regulator with a higher opening temperature. The water temperature regulators currently available for use on these engines are shown in the chart. If your engines use fuel with a high sulfur content, it may be to your advantage to change to one of the water temperature regulators with a higher opening temperature. In some marine engine applications with raw water heat exchangers, a higher temperature regulator may activate the high coolant temperature alarm. In these engines it will be necessary to use the original temperature regulator.

In areas where the sulfur content in the fuel is greater than 1.5% by weight and oil with a TBN value of 30 is not available, use a CD performance oil with the highest available TBN value and decrease the oil change periods. Check the condition of the oil and the engine with Scheduled Oil Sampling.
