SERVICE MAGAZINE, FEBRUARY 4, 1980, PAGES 6 AND 7. In the article "New Turbocharger Group Has A Water-Cooled Bearing Housing" that starts on Page 6, change the "ADAPTABLE TO:" paragraph at the top of Page 7 to read:
Adaptable To: The new turbocharger and the new lines groups are adaptable to earlier machines with Engine Serial Numbers 97U7229-up when the parts shown in the chart are used together. Information about conversion of machines with earlier engines will be given in a future article when the necessary parts become available.
--------------- END SUPPLEMENT ---------------
Description of Change: A new turbocharger with a water-cooled bearing housing is used on engines for D9H and DD9H Tractors, and 594H Pipelayers. A new turbocharger water lines group and a new turbocharger oil lines group are also used with the new turbocharger.
This new turbocharger design keeps oil temperatures inside the bearing housing lower during operation and shutdown. This will prevent oil from coking in the oil passages.
Formerly, the high temperatures in the bearing housings of the former turbochargers some times permitted oil coking. This caused leakage around the seals, bearing failures and some times complete turbocharger failures.
Changes to another water lines group and the transmission oil cooler group give ports to supply and drain the new turbocharger water lines group.
The shield group has been changed to give clearance for the turbocharger oil lines group. These changes permit the use of the new turbocharger on earlier machines.
