Final Drive Spindle and Wheel Brakes - Disassemble

Usage:

Disassembly Procedure

Start By:

a. Remove the final drive, brake and wheel assembly from the axle housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive, Brake and Wheel - Remove" for the machine that is being serviced.

b. Remove the wheel assembly from the spindle assembly. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive and Wheel - Disassemble" for the machine that is being serviced.


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special PUblication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


1. Place brake assembly (1) and spindle assembly (2) in a vertical position, as shown.

2. Remove three O-ring seals (3) and O-ring seal (4) from brake assembly (1).

NOTE: Put identification marks on the brake and spindle housings for installation purposes.

3. Install Tooling (B) on brake assembly (1), as shown. Attach a hoist and suitable lifting chains to Tooling (B).

Personal injury can result from being struck by parts propelled by a released spring force.

Make sure to wear all necessary protective equipment.

Follow the recommended procedure and use all recommended tooling to release the spring force.

4. Loosen four bolts (5) in a crosswise pattern approximately 1/8 of a turn each, until all bolts are loose.

5. Remove brake assembly (1) from spindle assembly (2). The weight of brake assembly (1) is 145 Kg (320 lb).

6. Remove O-ring seal (6) from spindle assembly (2).

7. Use Tooling (C) to remove retaining ring (8) from hub (7).

8. Remove five brake plates (9) and four brake discs (10) from spindle assembly (2).

9. Remove hub (7) from spindle assembly (2).

10. Install Tooling (B) on piston housing (12), as shown. Attach a hoist and suitable lifting chains to Tooling (B).

11. Loosen four bolts (11) in a crosswise pattern approximately 1/8 of a turn each, until all bolts are loose.

12. Remove piston housing (12) from piston housing (13). The weight of piston housing (12) is 56 Kg (123 lb).

13. Remove fourteen inner springs (14) and fourteen outer springs (15) from piston housing (13).

14. Remove piston seal (16) and O-ring seal (17) from piston housing (13).

15. Remove piston assembly (18) from piston housing (12). The weight of piston assembly (18) is 20 Kg (44 lb).

16. Remove piston seal (19) from piston housing (12).

17. Remove piston seals (20) and (21) from piston assembly (18).

18. Use Tooling (A) and a press to compress four springs (22).

19. Remove four retaining pins (24) from four spring guides (23).

20. Release the pressure from the press. Remove four spring guides (23), four springs (22) and four washers (25) from the brake piston assembly.

21. Remove service brake piston (26) from parking brake piston (27).
