Wheel Bearing Adjustment

Usage:

SMCS Code:4051; 4201; 4205; 4208; 4215; 4234

(5) 8K-0066Shim Pack thickness ... 2.84 mm (.112 inch)

Consisting of:

Six ... 0.05 mm (.002 inch)Seven ... 0.25 mm (.010 inch)One ... 0.76 mm (.030 inch)

Adjustment Procedure (On Machine)

NOTE: The tire and rim must be removed for this procedure.

1. Use an outside micrometer to measure the thickness of retainer (4) at each of the three small holes used for the depth measurement. Find the average value of the three measurements.

2. Apply lubricating oil to the wheel bearings. Assemble the seal group, wheel bearings and wheel assembly (1) on spindle housing (6).

3. Install hub (2) on spindle housing (6).

4. Use three bolts (3), as shown in Illustration A, to install retainer (4) without the shims on spindle housing (6).

5. Tighten bolts (3) in the sequence shown in Illustration A to ... 115 ± 15 N·m (85 ± 11 lb ft)

6. Rotate the wheel assembly one revolution. Tighten bolts (3) again to ... 115 ± 15 N·m (85 ± 11 lb ft).

Bolt Tightening Sequence

7. Loosen bolts (3) so wheel assembly (1) can move a small amount on the wheel bearings.

8. Tighten bolts (3) again in sequence to ... 20 ± 7 N·m (15 ± 5 lb ft).

9. Rotate the wheel assembly one revolution. Tighten bolts (3) again to ... 20 ± 7 N·m (15 ± 5 lb ft).

10. Use a depth micrometer to measure the distance from the outside of retainer (4) to the end of spindle housing (6), through the three small holes in retainer (4). Find the average value of the three measurements.

11. Subtract retainer (4) thickness from Step 1 from the value found in Step 10. The difference is the clearance between the end of spindle housing (6) and retainer (4).

12. Assemble shims (5) to obtain the same thickness as the clearance dimension found in Step 11. The shim pack must be within ... ± 0.025 mm (.001 inch)of the clearance dimension.

13. Remove bolts (3) and retainer (4).

14. Install shim pack (5), retainer (4) and bolts (3) to spindle housing (6). Tighten bolts (3) evenly and in sequence from the top. Tighten bolts (3) to ... 125 ± 20 N·m (90 ± 15 lb ft)plus tighten an additional ... 120 ± 10°.
