Description of Change: Improved processes are used in the remanufacture of 3500 Engine connecting rod. These improved processes result in increased quality and increased serviceable life of Remanufactured 3500 Engine connecting rods. Some of the features and benefits of the new remanufactured 3500 Engine connecting rod follow:

* All 3500 Engine connecting rods are cleaned, magnetic particle checked for material defects, and thoroughly inspected to ensure their fitness for reuse.
* Rod bushings are removed. New bushings are installed and machined to new parts tolerances and proof load tested to 30 kN (6750 lb) to ensure bushing retention.
* Crankshaft bores are compared against reuse specifications and separated into rods that either meet reuse criteria or into rods that require re-sizing. Those rods that meet reuse criteria are finish processed to ensure all surface finishes are within tolerance. The revised machine process for those rods that need re-sizing results in less material being removed from the crank bore. This improves the rod to cap connection and bolt hole alignment. This improved bolt hole alignment results in a remanufactured connecting rod with the same as new connecting rod performance.
* A system has been developed for tracking 3500 Engine connecting rods. The program records each rod's original production serial number, process date, and processing method. This facilitates identifying and scrapping any core that has been previously re-sized.

Adaptable To: The new Remanufactured 0R-9200 Connecting Rod Assembly is a direct replacement for the former Remanufactured 0R-4381 Connecting Rod Assembly or the standard production 101-3281 Connecting Rod Assembly. The former remanufactured connecting rod assembly is canceled.

The 101-3281 or Remanufactured OR-4381 Connecting Rod Assemblies are acceptable core for the new Remanufactured 0R-9200 Connecting Rod Assembly, providing they meet the simple visual core acceptance guidelines. See Core Acceptance Guide, SELD0016-03 for details.
