New Procedure For Tightening Bolts On Center Cluster Stub Shaft And Camshaft Idler Stub Shafts In Rear Gear Groups{1206,1237}

Usage:

3612 (9RC),
3616 (1PD, 1FN) Diesel Engines

Reference: Specifications, 3612 & 3616 Diesel Engines, SENR3592-01.

Disassembly & Assembly, 3612 & 3616 Engines, SENR3594-03.

Location of components.

In order to prevent stub shaft fretting and bolt breakage, a new procedure has been developed to tighten the bolts that fasten the central stub shaft and the camshaft idler stub shafts in the rear gear groups to the rear of the cylinder block. The new procedure follows:

NOTE: Use the Reference Disassembly & Assembly module as a general guide in this procedure. This module also identifies the tooling required for this procedure.

1. Remove actuator.

2. Remove the upper half of the flywheel guards.

3. Remove the appropriate covers.

4. Rotate the engine until the timing pins can be installed in the camshafts and crankshaft.

5. Remove the right and left camshaft drive gears (A). See the illustration.

6. Loosen (but do not remove) the four bolts that hold the retainer plate on the center cluster gear.

7. Remove the right and left camshaft idler gear and stub shaft assemblies (B).

8. While supporting the center cluster gear and stub shaft assembly (C), remove the four bolts that fasten the stub shaft to the cylinder block. Replace the four bolts (2) with new 9X-8886 Bolts.

NOTE: Refer to the "Snap On Torque Computer," SEHS7150, to calculate torque when using the 4C-9451 and 4C-9452 Idler Gear Wrenches to tighten bolts (1) and (2).

9. Use the tooling indicated in the Disassembly & Assembly module to tighten the four new bolts (2) to a torque of 160 ± 16 N·m (118 ± 12 lb ft). Then tighten each bolt an additional 45 ± 5 degrees.

10. Install the left hand camshaft idler gear and stub shaft assembly (B) with four new 1A-8063 Bolts (1).

11. Tighten the four new bolts (1) to a torque of 160 ± 16 N·m (118 ± 12 lb ft). Then tighten each bolt an additional 45 ± 5 degrees.

12. Repeat Steps 10 and 11 to install the right hand idler gear and stub shaft assembly.

13. Install the right and left camshaft drive gears (A).

14. Remove and store crankshaft and camshaft timing pins.

15. Install the covers removed in Step 3.

16. Install flywheel guards removed in Step 2.

17. Install actuator.

Make note of this information in the appropriate locations in the Reference Specification module and Disassembly & Assembly module.
