Description of Change: A new valve stem seal is used on the inlet and exhaust valves in the 1.1 Liter Family of Engines. (Formerly, a seal was not used on the exhaust valve stem.) The valve spring sits on top of the new seal flange, and this requires a different spring retainer to maintain the same compressed spring length. See Illustration 1.

The former seal formed only an "umbrella" over the end of the valve stem guide. The former seal was not retained and thus it could slide up and down with the valve and become ineffective. The new seal seats directly on the head, and is held in this position by the force of the valve spring.

NOTE: As an interim change, the new spring retainer was used with the FORMER seal. Since the new retainer was designed for use with the new seal that has a flange under the spring, a 9Y7355 Seat (Spacer) is required to maintain the same compressed spring length on these interim engines. See Illustration 2.

On the interim engines, the new 9Y8847 Seal Assembly can be installed in place of the former 7C7448 Seal and the 9Y7355 Seat. Do not use the seat if the new seal is used. The new 9Y7356 Retainers already on these engines can be reused.

For the earlier engines that are using both the former retainer and former seal, replace these parts with the new 9Y7356 Retainers and new 9Y8847 Seal Assemblies. See Illustration 1. Do not use the 9Y7355 Seat.

Installing The New Seals

The seals can be installed with the head on the engine, and with the fuel injectors installed, by using a special plate to compress the springs. Make this plate as shown in Illustration 3. Use mild steel plate, 6.0 mm (.25") thick.

Also needed are three threaded rods. They should be about 153 mm (6.0") long with 8 mm threads (M8 by 1.25).

To prevent the valves from falling inside the cylinders, the pistons should be at TDC (Top Dead Center). For 3114 Engines, this means pistons 1 and 4 are at TDC when the 8T0100 Bolt engages the timing hole in the flywheel through the flywheel housing. Turning the crankshaft 180° counterclockwise (CCW) moves pistons 2 and 3 to TDC.

For 3116 Engines, pistons 1 and 6 are at TDC when the 8T0100 Bolt engages the timing hole. Turning the crankshaft 120° CCW moves pistons 2 and 5 to TDC, and another 120° moves 3 and 4 to TDC.

NOTE: An easy way to know when the crankshaft has been turned 120° is to first mark TDC on the damper for pistons 1 and 6, and then add two more marks 120° apart.

1. Turn crankshaft until pistons 1 and 4 (3114 Engines), or pistons 1 and 6 (3116 Engines), are at TDC.

2. Remove rocker arms.

NOTE: Be sure to keep the rocker arms flat when removing to keep them from falling apart.

3. Use the three rods to install the compressor plate to compress springs for cylinder No. 1. Two of the rod holes align with the rocker stand bolt holes, and the third hole aligns with the inlet manifold bolt hole next to the cylinder being worked on.

4. Use 8 mm nuts on the three rods to draw the plate down on the valve springs. Keep the plate as flat as possible while compressing the springs.

5. Remove retainer locks.


NOTICE

Cover the push tube cavities with a shop towel to prevent small objects from falling into the engine. Small objects could damage the engine.


6. Remove plate, retainers, springs, spring seats (if installed), and the former seal around the inlet valve stem.

7. Scrap the former seals and former retainers.

NOTE: As stated previously, some interim engines have the former seals with the new retainers, but a 9Y7355 Seat is installed under the spring. Reuse these new retainers.

8. Measure the height of the valve guide above the head. It should be 23.0 ± 0.5 mm (.91 ± .02"). Change as necessary.

9. Lubricate inside of the new seals with clean oil.

10. Press the new seals over the valve guides until they sit flush on the head. Tap the seals lightly to drive them down on the guides. Use a 19 mm (.75") deepwell socket.

11. Install the valve springs and the new retainers. Compress the springs with the plate and install the retainer locks.

12. Remove the plate and rods.

13. Repeat procedure for cylinders 4 (3114) or 6 (3116).

14. Rotate engine 180° (3114) or 120° (3116).

15. Repeat procedure for cylinders 2 and 3 (3114) or 2 and 5 (3116).

16. Rotate 3116 Engine another 120° and repeat procedure for cylinders 3 and 4.

17. Install rocker arms after all new valve seals are installed.

18. Check valve lash and injector timing per applicable Service Manual.

19. Install valve cover.

20. Run engine under a load until any previous oil deposits are burned off.
