Removal Procedure


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, PERJ1017, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Hot engine components can cause injury from burns. Before performing maintenance on the engine, allow the engine and the components to cool.

Personal injury or death may result from failure to adhere to the following procedures.

Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire.

Clean up all leaked or spilled fuel. Do not smoke while working on the fuel system.

Turn the disconnect switch OFF or disconnect the battery when changing fuel filters.


  1. Install the truck body retaining cable. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cable (Truck Body Retaining)".

  2. Disconnect hose assemblies (1) and clips (2).

  3. Disconnect clips (3).

  4. Remove 16 bolts (4), 16 washers (5), and four plates (6).

  5. Disconnect hose assemblies (7). Refer to Special Instruction, REHS8231, "Removal Procedures for Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Connectors" for the correct removal procedure of hose assembly (7).

  6. Remove clips (8), clips (9), and clips (10).

  7. Disconnect hose assemblies (11). Refer to Special Instruction, REHS8231, "Removal Procedures for Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Connectors" for the correct removal procedure of hose assembly (7).

  8. Remove clips (12), and clips (13).

  9. Remove clips (14) and clips (15).

  10. Remove bolts (16) and bracket assembly mounting bolts (17).

  11. Remove bracket assembly mounting bolts (18) and place hose assemblies to the side.

  12. Disconnect harness connectors (19) and grommet clip (20).

  13. Attach a suitable lifting device to exhaust pipe (24). Exhaust pipe (24) weighs approximately 54.5 kg (120 lb).

  14. Remove clamp (21) and bolts (23).

  15. Remove exhaust pipe (24).

  16. Repeat Step 13 through Step 15 for exhaust pipe (22).

    ------ WARNING! ------

    Personal injury can result from being struck by parts propelled by a released spring force.

    Make sure to wear all necessary protective equipment.

    Follow the recommended procedure and use all recommended tooling to release the spring force.


  17. Remove springs (25) and heat shields (26) from both exhaust tube assemblies.

  18. Attach a suitable lifting device to exhaust tube assembly (27). Exhaust tube assembly (27) weighs approximately 33 kg (73 lb).

  19. Remove band clamp (29) and pillow assembly (30).

  20. Remove bolts (28) and exhaust tube assembly (27).

  21. Repeat Step 17 through Step 19 for the opposite exhaust tube assembly. The opposite exhaust tube assembly weighs approximately 36 kg (80 lb).

  22. Attach a suitable lifting device to clean emissions module (32). The combined weight of clean emission module (32) is approximately 1726 kg (3805 lb).

  23. Remove 32 bolts (31) and clean emissions module (32).

Installation Procedure

  1. Install clean emissions module (32) in the reverse order of removal.
