ENGINE NEWS, FEBRUARY, 1986, PAGE 8, "New Oil Viscosity Recommendations For All 7200 Series Marine Transmissions".
In the sixth line, remove the letters "W". Do specify engine oil. Do NOT use the letter "W".
--------------- END SUPPLEMENT ---------------
The oil viscosity recommendations for all 7200 Series Marine Transmissions has been changed to be more compatible with the higher transmission oil temperatures in transmissions where the oil is cooled by engine jacket water. The new recommendation requires that either SAE 40W or SAE 50W oil be used in transmissions with jacket water cooling. This is because the oil temperatures are close to or exceed 93°C (200°F). These new recommendations are now shown in Change 2 of the 7W102 Marine Transmission Maintenance Film. See illustration.
The higher viscosity oil gives longer life to gear teeth and bearings in all applications where the oil temperature is in the 93°C (200°F) range. This is particularly important for 6:1 ratio 7211 and 7221 Transmissions because their high gear ratios and smaller size pinion gears have higher tooth loads than other transmissions. The higher viscosity oil also gives smoother clutch engagement.
Add a Note to the Operator's Guides and to the Operation and Maintenance Guide (SEBU5376-01) referring to this article.
The new recommendations can be used with all earlier 7200 Series Marine Transmissions. Order the new film and install it over the existing film. The higher viscosity oil should be used in the 7211 and 7221 Transmissions at the next oil change.
The new maintenance film has the new oil temperature range bars.
