Swing Motor - Test - Measurement of Case Drain Oil

Usage:

336 DKS

------ WARNING! ------

Crush Hazard

The machine may swing when the swing motor brake solenoid connector is disconnected and there is an input to the joystick.

Wait at least two minutes after disconnection of the harness before using the joystick. Slowly move the joystick when verifying that the swing parking brake has engaged.

To avoid possible injury or death ensure that no personnel is in the swing radius of the machine when verifying swing parking brake actuation.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement.

Sudden movement of the machine can cause injury to persons on or near the machine.

To prevent injury or death, make sure that the area around the machine is clear of personnel and obstructions before operating the machine.

------ WARNING! ------

Hot hydraulic oil under high pressure can remain in the components of the hydraulic system or the power train system after the engine has been stopped. The uncontrolled release of the hydraulic oil can cause sudden machine movement and can also result in the following conditions:

  • Burns

  • The penetration of body tissue

  • Other personal injury

  • Death

If hydraulic oil penetrates body tissue, the injury must be treated immediately by a doctor who is familiar with this type of injury. Use a board or a piece of cardboard to check for a hydraulic oil leak. Make sure that all of the attachments have been lowered to the ground and that all trapped pressure has been released from the hydraulic system and the power train system. Also, make sure that the hydraulic oil is cool before the removal of any components or lines. Remove the hydraulic oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

Introduction

Use the following procedure to measure the case drain of the swing motor.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, PERJ1017, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Test Preparation

  1. Stop the engine.

  2. Release the pressure in the hydraulic system. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "System Pressure Release".

  3. Attach 311-1362 Vacuum Cap onto the hydraulic tank. Attach an air supply hose onto the assembly. Apply 276 to 414 kPa (40 to 60 psi). This procedure will pull a vacuum on the hydraulic system.

  4. Install the following tools in accordance with the flow meter tool layout. Refer to Illustration 3.

  5. Disconnect case drain hose (2) from adapter (1).

  6. Connect the flow meter assembly (D) between adapter (1) and case drain hose (1).

Note: Correct orientation of the flow meter is necessary. The oil flows from swing motor (4) to swivel (3).

  7. Remove 311-1362 Vacuum Cap.

Note: During testing that requires the disconnection of the swing parking brake harness, wait for two minutes before moving the joystick to check the swing motor parking brake function.

Test Procedure

  1. Start the engine.

  2. Place the hydraulic activation control lever in the UNLOCKED position.

  3. Increase the hydraulic oil temperature to 55° ± 5°C (131° ± 9°F).

  4. Place the machine controls at the following settings: engine speed dial "7" and AEC switch OFF. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Engine Performance - Test (Engine Speed)" for engine rpm settings.

  5. Be sure that at least two minutes have passed since the disconnection of the swing parking brake harness connector. Slowly move the swing joystick and make sure that the swing brake is activated.

  6. Move the swing joystick fully for 1 minute. Measure the case drain oil. Refer to Table 1.

  7. Stop the engine.

  8. Connect connector (6) to the solenoid valve for the swing parking brake (5).

  9. Repeat this test procedure three times to obtain three measurements of case drain oil. For each test procedure, swing the upper structure to a different position.
