The transmission oil pump is located on the front of the transmission. The transmission oil pump is a two section gear pump. One section is a low-pressure section supplying oil to the torque converter. The other section is a high-pressure section supplying oil through the oil filter to the following components:
- ECPC Valves (1) through (7)
- Main relief valve (21)
As stated above, the oil pump in mounted on the front of the transmission. The pump is driven by the impeller hub on the torque converter. Since the impeller turns with the engine and flywheel, the oil pump will turn with the engine. When the engine is running, oil is drawn through suction screen (9), through the center manifold, and into both suction ports in the pump. The oil flows around the outside of the pump gears into port (27) and port (29). Relief valve (33) limits the pressure in the high-pressure circuit and protects the system during cold start ups.
High-pressure oil in port (29) exits the transmission through a hose to the transmission filter. Oil from the filter returns to the transmission and flows to the ECPC valves and the main relief. Excess oil from the main relief valve flows to the torque converter and torque converter inlet relief valve (21). Relief valve (21) limits the pressure of the oil entering the torque converter.
