A Self-Cleaning Oil Filter (SCF or SCOF) is an oil filter whose primary purpose is to ensure the oil going to the engine bearings and other components is clean and free of debris. The SCF is different from a traditional oil filter in that there is an internal mechanism designed to prevent build-up of debris on the filter media. This function eliminates the need to service this device. Debris is removed from the system through the centrifugal oil filter.

Oil from the oil cooler enters the filter from inlet tube assembly (1) on the bottom of the filter housing. The oil proceeds through the filtering media and exits through outlet tube assembly (2). A small amount of oil flows through hose (3) to power a hydraulic motor and then proceeds back to the crankcase. Line assembly (4) provides clean engine oil to the high-pressure fuel pump. Line assembly (5) carries back-flushed engine oil filled with contaminants to the centrifugal oil filter.
