Transmission Pressures - Test and Adjust

Usage:

OEMTPG145 BN3

------ WARNING! ------

Hot hydraulic oil under high pressure can remain in the components of the hydraulic system or the power train system after the engine has been stopped. The uncontrolled release of the hydraulic oil can cause sudden machine movement and can also result in the following conditions:

  • Burns

  • The penetration of body tissue

  • Other personal injury

  • Death

If hydraulic oil penetrates body tissue, the injury must be treated immediately by a doctor who is familiar with this type of injury. Use a board or a piece of cardboard to check for a hydraulic oil leak. Make sure that all of the attachments have been lowered to the ground and that all trapped pressure has been released from the hydraulic system and the power train system. Also, make sure that the hydraulic oil is cool before the removal of any components or lines. Remove the hydraulic oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from not engaging the parking brake.

Transmission engagement alone will not prevent machine from rolling when the engine is stopped.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Machine Setup

  1. Park the machine on a smooth, level surface.

  2. Place the transmission in the NEUTRAL position.

  3. Lower the work tool to the ground.

  4. Engage the parking brake.

  5. Place chocks in front of the wheels and behind the wheels.

  6. Perform machine walk-around and check for any leaks or damage. Check transmission oil level and fill to proper level if necessary.

  7. Allow only authorized personnel on the machine. Keep unauthorized personnel off the machine and in clear sight of the operator.

  8. Transmission oil should at normal operating temperature.

Test Procedures

Transmission Oil Pump (Charge Pressure) Test

This test also serves to test the transmission pump (charge pressure) relief valve.

  1. Perform the steps in "Machine Setup" and continue to the following steps.

  2. Remove the plug from port (4) and install Tooling (C).

  3. Select an appropriate gauge range. Attach Tooling (A) or (B) to Tooling (C).

  4. Engage the parking brake. Apply service brake. Shift the transmission to the neutral position. Start the engine.

  5. Observe and record operating pressures at low idle and high idle engine speeds.

Note: Compare observed pressures to the reference table in "Transmission Pressures" within the "Specifications" section above.

Transmission Oil Filter Pressure Differential Test

  1. Perform the steps in "Machine Setup" and continue to the following steps.

  2. Remove the plugs from ports (3) and (4) and install Tooling (C) into both ports.

  3. Select an appropriate gauge range. Attach Tooling (A) or (B) to Tooling (C).

Note: Tooling quantities will be doubled for this procedure as two measurements will be taken at the same time.

  4. Engage the parking brake. Apply service brake. Shift the transmission to the neutral position. Start the engine.

  5. Observe and record operating pressures at high idle engine speed.

  6. Subtract the lower pressure from the higher pressure reading to figure the oil filter pressure differential.

Note: Compare pressure differential to the reference table in "Transmission Pressures" within the "Specifications" section above.

Torque Converter Inlet Pressure Test

This test also serves to test the torque converter inlet pressure relief valve.

  1. Perform the steps in "Machine Setup" and continue to the following steps.

  2. Remove the plug from port (12) and install Tooling (C).

  3. Select an appropriate gauge range. Attach Tooling (A) or (B) to Tooling (C).

  4. Engage the parking brake. Apply service brake. Shift the transmission to the neutral position. Start the engine.

  5. Observe and record operating pressure at high idle engine speed.

Note: Compare observed pressure to the reference table in "Transmission Pressures" within the "Specifications" section above.

Transmission Lubrication Pressure Test

  1. Perform the steps in "Machine Setup" and continue to the following steps.

  2. Remove the plug from port (8) and install Tooling (C).

Clutch Pressure Test

The following procedure is to be used for testing all clutch pressures.

Select a clutch to test. Use the clutch engagement charts in "Clutch Engagement by Gear Selection" to select a gear that will activate the clutch being tested. Locate the corresponding test port using the images in "Location of Pressure Test Ports" above.

Test any or all clutches as needed.

  1. Perform the steps in "Machine Setup" and continue to the following steps.

  2. Remove the plug from the corresponding clutch pressure test port. Install Tooling (C).

  3. Select an appropriate gauge range. Attach Tooling (A) or (B) to Tooling (C).

  4. Engage the parking brake. Apply service brake. Shift the transmission to the neutral position. Start the engine.

  5. Observe and record operating pressure at low idle engine speed.

Note: Compare observed pressure to the reference table in "Transmission Pressures" within the "Specifications" section above.
