Introduction

Ensure that you read and fully understand the information that follows before ordering any parts or performing any procedures.

This Special Instruction contains the procedures to replace the previous engine alternator mounting group with the new engine alternator mounting group. This change will help prevent vibration damage present in the previous alternator mounting groups design.

Removal Procedure

Table 1 contains the parts removed to allow for installation of the new components.

  1. Mount block (9) with rod assembly (6) and secure with bolt (2) .

  1. Install bracket (8) using taperlock studs (4) and the previously removed nuts to the front housing.

  1. Lubricate mounts (5) with rubber lubricant (10) before installation. Assemble the alternator to the support assembly (8) using the bolt, washers, and nut that was previously removed.

Note: Place a washer on the inside next to support assembly (8) on the nut side. Refer to Illustration 2 for locations and specifications.

    Note: Torque the bolt to 105 ± 20 N·m (77 ± 15 lb ft).

  1. Assemble adjusting rod (7) and two jam nuts (1) to the rod assembly. Tighten the assembly to the proper torque.

Note: Use a backup wrench to secure the rod end (7) when tightening the jam nut against the rod end. Torque the jam nut (16) to 40 N·m (30 lb ft)

Note: Assemblies in Step 5 are to be assembled hand tight, so that the alternator V belt can be adjusted prior to final torque of the components.

  1. Install the alternator on adjustment rod (7) with one nut (1) on the outside of the alternator.

  1. Install the V-belt and adjust belt tension according to the following procedure.

    1. With both rod adjustment jam nuts (1) loose, release rod block bolt by ? turn.

    1. Drape belt around the pulleys.

    1. Check that the belt fits in the pulley grooves.

    1. Set belt tension (180 +/- 10 lbs).

    1. Torque rod block bolt (2).

    1. Torque outside jam nut (1) while holding the inside jam nut (1) to maintain correct positioning. Torque to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).
