Start By:
- Remove the cylinder head. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Cylinder Head - Remove" for the correct procedure.

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
- Use Tooling (A) to remove lifter (1) from the cylinder block.
Note: Make a temporary identification mark on each lifter in order to identify the correct location.
- Repeat Step 1 for the remaining lifters.

It is strongly recommended that all lifters should be replaced when a new camshaft is installed. |

- Clean lifters (1). Follow Step 1.a through Step 1.c in order to inspect the lifters. Replace lifters that are worn or damaged.
- Inspect the seat of the pushrod in the lifter for visual wear or damage. Ensure that oil holes in the lifter are not restricted.
- Inspect the shank of the lifter for wear or damage. Refer to Specifications, "Lifter Group" for more information.
- Inspect the face of the lifter that runs on the camshaft for visual wear or damage.
- Lubricate lifters (1) with clean engine oil.
- Install lifters (1) into the cylinder block.
Note: The lifters should be free to rotate. If the lifters have been used, ensure that the lifters are installed in the original positions.
