This engine is equipped with a Closed Crankcase Ventilation System (CCV) that is used for capturing fumes. Fumes from the rear crankcase travel through the camshaft and exit the engine through the crankcase breather located at the front of the engine. The fumes from the crankcase breather are collected in the CCV. The engine oil is separated from the fumes from the crankcase in the filter. The engine oil collects in the filter and drains back to the crankcase through a drain line in the bottom of the filter. The fumes from the crankcase are directed back into the compressor inlet in order to be consumed by the engine.
Higher crankcase pressures will tend to create oil leaks. If the filter becomes plugged the engine will not be able to relieve the crankcase pressure. The plugged filter will cause the engine to develop external oil leaks. For more information, refer to the OMM, "Closed Crankcase Ventilation (CCV) System Fumes Disposal Filter - Replace".
