C4.4 Marine Generator Set Caterpillar

Sea Water Pump Pressure Is Low

Usage:

C4.4 NRP
This procedure is only applicable to applications with a raw water cooling system.

The following code is associated with low sea water pump outlet pressure:

Table 1
Diagnostic Code for Low Sea Water Pump Pressure
J1939 Code     Code Description     Comments
2435-17     Seawater Pump Outlet Pressure : Low - least severe (1)     Th ECM detects that the outlet pressure of the sea water pump is below the trip point for 30 seconds.
The warning lamp is lit and the code is logged.

Probable Causes

  • Diagnostic code

  • Pump inlet blocked

  • Pump impeller damaged

Recommended Actions

Note: The procedures have been listed in order of probability. Complete the procedures in order.

Troubleshooting Test Steps     Values     Results

1. Check for Diagnostic Codes

A. Establish communication between the electronic service tool and the Electronic Control Module (ECM). Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tools", if necessary.

B. Download the "Warranty Report" from the engine ECM before performing any troubleshooting or clearing diagnostic trouble codes.

Diagnostic codes

Result: There are active or logged codes.

Troubleshoot any codes before continuing with this procedure.

Result: A 2435-17 code is active or recently logged.

Proceed to Test Step 2.

2. Check the Inlet Pipe for the Sea Water Pump

A. Disconnect the inlet pipe from the sea water pump.

B. Check the inlet pipe for the following defects:

· Blockages
· Restrictions
· Damage to the pipe
· Loose connections

Inlet pipe

Result: The inlet pipe is blocked, restricted, damaged, or loose.

Make all necessary repairs to the inlet pipe.

Confirm that the fault has been eliminated.

Result: The inlet pipe is OK.

Do not reconnect the pipe. Proceed to Test Step 3.

3. Check the Sea Water Pump Impeller

A. Crank the engine by hand and check the sea water pump impeller for damage.

Pump impeller

Result: The sea water pump impeller is damaged.

Replace the impeller. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Auxiliary Water Pump - Disassemble" and Disassembly and Assembly, "Auxiliary Water Pump - Assemble".

Confirm that the fault has been eliminated.

Result: The sea water pump impeller is OK.
