NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.


    Note: Prior to removal of the flywheel, position the number one piston in the top center position (TC). The engine should be at the top center position in order to properly install the rear gear group. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Finding Top Center Position for No. 1 Piston".

  1. With the number one piston in the top center position (TC), attach a Marker to the engine and place an Alignment Mark on the vibration damper.

  2. Remove the flywheel housing.

  3. Remove bolts (10), thrust plate (11), and gear assembly (9).

  4. Use Tooling (A) and a suitable press to remove the bearing from gear assembly (9).

  5. Remove bolts (8), gear assembly (6), and shaft assembly (7).

  6. Use Tooling (A) and a suitable press to remove the bearing from gear assembly (6).

  7. Remove bolts (2), gear assembly (1), and shaft assembly (3).

  8. Use Tooling (A) and a suitable press to remove the bearing from gear assembly (1).

  9. Remove gear assembly (12).

  10. Remove bolts (5) and gear assemblies (4).

  11. Remove bolts (16) and shaft assembly (17).

  12. Remove bolts (13), thrust plates (14), and adapter assemblies (15).

  13. Use bolt (13) in order to remove the sealing plates. Remove the O-ring seals.
