117-7213 Control Group (Vehicle Speed Filter) Available For Field Installation{1914}

Usage:

3176B (9CK),
3406E (5EK) Truck Engines

A 117-7213 Vehicle Speed Filter is available for field installation on the above engines. This filter should be installed on engines that are logging erroneous vehicle speed diagnostic code 84-10 "Vehicle Speed Rate Of Change" and/or diagnostic code 84-08 "Vehicle Speed Out Of Range". The 117-7213 Vehicle Speed Filter is designed to filter the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) vehicle speed signal that is being fed into the engine Electronic Control Module (ECM).

Troubleshooting

Before installing a 117-7213 Vehicle Speed Filter, some basic vehicle speed circuit troubleshooting steps should be made. Follow "3176B And 3406E Electronic Troubleshooting Guide", Form SENR5582-01, Procedure P506, Steps 1 through 5. If the problem is not resolved after completing this procedure, install a 117-7213 Vehicle Speed Filter. Typical symptoms, in addition to the diagnostic codes 84-10 and 84-08, may include:

* Service Tool displays vehicle speed while the truck is not moving.
* Speedometer jumps when the truck is stationary (if driven by engine ECM).
* Service Tool displayed vehicle speed jumps of more than 2 mile per hour (MPH) while the actual truck speed is constant.
* Cruise control and/or Power Take Off (PTO) kick outs.
* Reduced engine speed while diagnostic codes 84-10 and/or 84-08 is active.

In many cases the problem can be recreated and the above troubleshooting can be done while the truck is stationary.

NOTE: When making the connector checks, inspect for moisture entry into the P1, P2, P24/J24 connectors and all OEM vehicle speed circuit connectors. If moisture is present, the root cause of the moisture entry MUST be repaired.

Installation

The 117-7213 Vehicle Speed Filter is installed in series with the existing engine harness P24 and J24 connectors. See the illustration.

NOTE: The P24 and J24 connectors serve as both a vehicle speed and timing calibration connection. When performing a timing calibration on an engine having a 117-7213 Vehicle Speed Filter, connect the 7X-1695 Deutsch DT Timing Probe Cable Assembly directly into the P24 engine harness connector. DO NOT connect the 7X-1695 Deutsch DT Timing Probe Cable Assembly into the vehicle speed filter.
