Some 3116 Truck Engines can be difficult to start after running the truck out of fuel, changing the fuel filter, or installing a governor. Air introduced into the fuel system during any of these operations can be difficult to purge from the fuel system by cranking alone.
If the engine will not start and sustain operation after any of the above operations, first check to make sure there is no air in the fuel filter. Use the procedure described in the "Replace Fuel Filter" information in the Reference. The fuel filter can be filled with fuel by removing plug (3) and filling the filter with fuel. This will allow only filtered fuel to enter the fuel system.
Location of fittings to loosen to purge air from fuel system.
After making sure there is no air in the fuel filter, loosen fitting (2) on fuel line from the transfer pump to the fuel filter base. Crank the engine until all the air is purged from the line and then tighten fitting (2). Next loosen fitting (1) on the fuel return to tank line at the check valve outlet. Crank the engine until all the air is purged from the fuel system and then tighten fitting (1).
Start the engine using the procedure described in the Reference.
