Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
- The engine can start automatically. Ensure that the power supply is isolated before any service or repairs is performed.

Illustration 1 g01340605 Typical example - If necessary, remove the assembly of dipstick tube. Loosen nut (1) and remove tube assembly (2). remove seal (3) from the tube assembly.
Note: Identify the position and orientation of the tube assembly.
- Drain the engine lubricating oil from the engine oil pan into a suitable container. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Oil and Filter - Change" for the correct procedure.
- Disconnect the breather hose from the closed circuit breather valve on the engine oil pan. Position the breather hose away from the engine oil pan.

Illustration 3 g01543236 - Engines that are keel cooled and sea water cooled remove bolts (8) from engine mount (9).
Sufficiently loosen nuts and bolts (8) on the engine with a radiator cooling system. Engines with a radiator cooled systems. Sufficiently loosen both the generator mounting bolts.
- Use a suitable lifting device to lift the front of the engine. The weight of the engine is approximately
600 kg (1323 lb) . Raise the front of the engine so that there is a distance of12 mm (0.50 inch) between mount (9) and the base frame.Support the weight of the engine with suitable cribbing under mount (9).
- Support engine oil pan (5). Loosen bolts (6) and bolts (7). There are 30 bolts in total
Note: Bolts (6) and (7) are held captive by gasket (4).
- Remove engine oil pan (5) from the engine.

- Ensure that engine oil pan (5) is clean and free from damage. Clean bolts (6) and (7). Inspect the bolts for deterioration or damage. If necessary, replace the bolts . Ensure that the gasket surface of the engine oil pan plate is clean.
Note: The bolts must be replaced as a complete set to ensure even clamping of the engine oil pan.
- Position a new gasket (4) onto the engine oil pan (5).

Note: Bolts (5) and (6) are held captive by the gasket.
- Install engine oil pan (5) and the gasket to the engine oil pan plate. Tighten the engine oil pan bolts to a torque of
22 N·m (195 lb in) in the sequence that is shown in Illustration 5. There are 26 bolts in total.Show/hide tableIllustration 6 g01340725 - Install the four remaining engine oil pan bolts and tighten to a torque of

- Use a suitable hoist to lower the front of the engine onto the base frame. Remove Tooling (B) from the engine mounts. Install bolts (8). Tighten bolts to a torque of
190 N·m (140 lb ft) .Engines with a radiator cooled systems. Tighten nuts and bolts for the engine mounting and the generator mounting to a torque of
190 N·m (140 lb ft) .Show/hide tableIllustration 8 g01340605 Typical example - If necessary, follow Step 8.a through Step 8.c to install the assembly of the dipstick tube.
- Install a new seal (3) to tube assembly (2).
- Apply Tooling (A) to nut (1). Install the tube assembly to the engine oil pan.
- Tighten the nut (1) to a torque of
18 N·m (159 lb in) . Install the dipstick (not shown).Note: Ensure that the orientation of the tube assembly is correct.
- Fill the engine oil pan to the correct level. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Oil Filter Change" for the procedure.
