- Improper electrical connections
- Aftermarket engine protection devices
- Fuel supply
- Engine speed/timing sensors
Shut down the engine before attempting to troubleshoot the problem.
Check the Electrical Connections
Ensure that the following connectors are connected correctly:
- Connectors for the engine speed/timing sensors
- ECM connectors
Check the vehicle wiring that provides electrical power to the ECM and the ground connections for the ECM. Pay particular attention to any electrical connectors that are in the circuit. Verify that the connections are secure and free of corrosion.
A circuit breaker may be tripping due to excessive heat. Some circuit breakers can reset automatically. Check the circuit breakers on the vehicle in order to determine if the circuit breakers can reset automatically.
Aftermarket Engine Protection Devices
Check any aftermarket engine protection devices for proper operation. These devices usually interrupt power to the ECM.
Check the fuel quality. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU6385, "Caterpillar On-Highway Diesel Truck Engine Fluid Recommendations".
Check the fuel pressure. Refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, "Fuel System".
Verify that the fuel system has been primed. Refer to the engines Operation and Maintenance Manual for the correct procedure.
Check for fuel supply lines that are restricted.
Check the fuel filters.
Cold weather adversely affects the characteristics of the fuel. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for information on improving the characteristics of the fuel during cold-weather operation.
Check the Engine Speed/Timing Sensors
Check the engine speed/timing sensors for proper operation. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Engine Speed - Test".
