Front Linkage Position Sensors (Position Sensing Cylinder and Rotary Sensors)
The Grade Control system uses two rotary position sensors that are located on the boom and the stick to measure the relative rotation angle between the two linkages. Refer to Special Instruction, M0069852, "Troubleshooting Guide for the Rotary Position Sensor for Cat® Grade Control on Certain Series E and Series F Excavators" for complete instruction on troubleshooting the Rotary Position Sensors (RPS).

Stick Rotary Position Sensor (3) Rotary position sensor (stick) (4) Mount plate for rotary position sensor (stick) |
The rotary position sensors (1) and (3), for the stick and boom are pulse width modulated sensors. Pulse width modulated sensors have a duty cycle signal that varies as the condition changes. The sensor continuously generates a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signal. The frequency of this sensor signal is constant at approximately 500 Hz.
Note: This sensor is mechanically functional 360 degrees and electrically functional 180 degrees.
Note: Duty cycle ranges from 5 to 95 percent throughout 180 degrees of rotation. For 90 degrees of the non-electrically functional rotation there is a constant 5 percent duty cycle and constant 95 percent duty cycle for the other 90 degrees.

Position Sensing Cylinder (PSC)
The Position Sensing Cylinder (PSC) measures the rod extension and retraction of the hydraulic cylinder for the bucket. The PSC uses a sensor that is integrated into the cylinder to make this measurement. Refer to Special Instruction, M0064526, "Troubleshooting Procedure For Bucket Cylinder Position Sensing Unit on Certain Hydraulic Excavators Equipped With Cat® Grade Control".
