Coolant Leaking from the Joint for the Tube to the Water Temperature Regulator Housing on Certain 3508B Locomotive Engines{1355, 1380, 1393} Caterpillar

Introduction

The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.

Problem

The joint between the coolant tube and the flange at the inlet for the water temperature regulator has leaked.

Solution

Use the following procedure to install a new clamp at the leaking joint.

1. Drain the coolant

2. Remove the bolts and washers in order to remove both retainers (1) .

3. Loosen the tube and the flange. Remove the O-ring seal and retaining ring (2) from the tube. Remove the O-ring seal from the bore in the flange.

4. Install ring (3) and O-ring seal (4) onto the tube. Install O-ring seal (5) into the bore of the flange.

5. Use the following hardware to install two clamp assemblies (10) as shown in Illustration 3:
   • Two bolts (6)

   • Six washers (7)

   • Two nuts (8)

   • Two bolts (9)

6. Refill the cooling system. Return the unit to service.
