Introduction

The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.

Problem

Illustration 1g02710706

(1) 328-7113 Cluster Gear Shaft

(2) 6V-8675 Bolt

Eleven bolts (2) are used to hold shaft (1). Some of the bolts can loosen.

The following conditions are symptoms of the improperly installed shaft:

  • A reduction or degradation of engine oil pressure

  • Excess engine oil flows out of the crankcase breather on grades.

Solution

If your engine has any of the symptoms that are listed above, remove the rear camshaft cover. Use a borescope, a flashlight, and a mirror to inspect the bolts that hold the shaft. Look for bolts that are loose. Also look for a mark of paint on each bolt head, which is typically an indication that the bolts have been torqued.

If suspected loose bolts are found, schedule time to remove the engine in order to install a new gear group and new bolts.
