A New V-Band Clamp and New Turbochargers Are Used in Certain 789C, 793C, and 793D Off-Highway Truck Engines with Low Altitude Arrangements {1052, 1053}

Usage:

789C 2BW
Engine
3516B (S/N: MSK1-UP; KNS1-UP; CPW1-UP)
Off-Highway Truck/Tractor
789C (S/N: 2BW1-UP)
793C (S/N: CBR1-UP; ATY1-UP)
793D (S/N: FDB1-UP)

Description Of Change: The new V-band clamp is made from material that can better withstand the high temperatures and the load of the cartridge joints. The clamp has a new locknut that makes using two nuts unnecessary.

The new turbochargers use the new V-band clamp.

Adaptable To: The new V-band clamp and turbochargers are adaptable to 3516B Engines in the above Off-Highway Trucks back to first production.

The new V-band clamp and turbochargers are effective with the following serial numbers:

  • FDB01592

  • MSK00392
The new parts and the former parts are listed in Table 1.

    (1) 349-3361 Turbine Clamp As

  1. Apply Loctite C5A Anti-Seize to the threads of clamp (1).

  2. Tighten the clamp to 11 ± 3 N·m (97 ± 27 lb in).

  3. Tap lightly all around the clamp with a soft-faced hammer.

  4. Tighten the clamp to 13 ± 3 N·m (115 ± 27 lb in)

  5. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 three more times.

Note: Do not retighten V-band clamps after the engine has ran.

Inspection of Used Turbochargers for Retrofitting the New Clamp

    Illustration 2g02684837

  1. Disassemble the turbine housing from the cartridge. Inspect for wear of the flange and pilot areas identified as locations (A), (B), (C), and (D) in Illustration 2

Do not use any components with the following conditions:

    • Obvious wear in the inspected locations

    • Evidence of turbine wheel rubbing

  2. With the turbocharger disassembled, fit a new clamp around the minor diameter of the center housing. Do not stretch the clamp around the major diameters of the flanges.

  3. Assemble the turbine housing and the cartridge. Tighten the clamp according to the procedure above in "Tightening Procedure for the Clamp".
