Cat® Digital Voltage Regulator Caterpillar

Group Support Level

Usage:

SR4B 1BN

Configuration

Settings Groups

The "Settings Group Support Level" must be set to "Multiple Group" for Tier 4i rental product applications that use the EMCP 4.2 or EMCP 4.4 with "complex software". The multiple group setting allows configuration of the parameters for groups 1 through 4. The multiple group setting also allows CAN communication commands from the EMCP to activate the appropriate CDVR group.

Note: Refer to the "CDVR Changes" information in Specifications, Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, RENR7941, "General Information" for related information.

Configure CDVR setting group #1 parameters to be compatible with setting group #1 parameters in the EMCP. Configure the remaining three groups in the same manner.

If the parameter "Settings Group Support Level" is to be set to "Single Group" for the Tier 4i rental product applications, then the CDVR will disable and lockout excitation.

The "Settings Group Support Level" configuration parameter must be set to "Single Group" for the following:

  • Open generator sets

  • Any application that does not use an EMCP 4.2 or EMCP 4.4 with "complex software"

The "Single Group" setting disables the multiple group features and allows changes to the original configuration parameters for the following:

  • Rated voltage

  • Rated current

  • Rated frequency

  • AVR voltage set point

  • Power input frequency

  • Minimum frequency

  • Knee frequency

Configure the parameters that are listed above to be compatible with the machine ratings.

If the "Settings Group Support Level" parameter is to be set to "Multiple Group" for open generator sets or any application that does not use an EMCP 4.2 or EMCP 4.4 with "complex software", then the CDVR will disable and lockout excitation.

Programmable Input

The following are the configuration options for the input and how to use the input.

Fault Reset - Activation of the input will cause all shutdown faults in the CDVR to be reset

Load Compensation Force To Off Mode - Activation of the input will cause load compensation to be forced to "Off" mode while this input is activated.

Load Compensation Force To Voltage Droop Mode - Activation of the input will cause load compensation to be forced to "Voltage Droop" mode while this input is activated.

Load Compensation Force To Line Drop (IR Compensation) Mode - Activation of the input will cause load compensation to be forced to "Line Drop" mode while this input is activated.

The following is an example of using the programmable input to manipulate load compensation. In the example, load compensation is programmed to "Off" and the programmable input programmed to "Voltage Droop" mode. Whenever the input is not active, load compensation will be in "Off" mode. When the input is activated, load compensation will switch to "Voltage Droop" mode and remain in voltage droop as long as the input is activated. Once the input is deactivated, load compensation will revert to "Off".

Configuration Files

When using a fleet configuration or ECM replacement file from another unit which did not support multiple settings groups, the "Single Group" parameters will not be received from the file if the parameter "Setting Group Support Level" is set to "Multiple Group".

CDVR Programming Error Protection

With the new CDVR firmware, the possibility exists that the CDVR parameter "Setting Group Support Level" could be programmed to the wrong value. The CDVR can determine if the EMCP is compatible with whichever setting (Single Group or Multiple Group) is being used in the CDVR, based on the information the CDVR receives from the EMCP over the CAN communication port. If a CDVR programming error is detected, then the CDVR will lockout excitation. The engine can run but the generator voltage will be low (less than 100 V typically) and an under voltage shutdown will occur.

Perform the following to recover from excitation lockout.

  1. Change to the correct value for "Setting Group Support Level" in the CDVR.

  2. Cycle the DC power to the CDVR to reset the CDVR.

CDVR Loss of Communications

With the CDVR set to Multiple groups and communicating with EMCP 4, the CDVR will follow the last commanded active group number sent from the EMCP 4. If the CAN communications are interrupted at any time, the CDVR will continue to operate using the last information received from the EMCP 4.

The situation could continue indefinitely while the CDVR is powered up. Communications could be restored at any time and CDVR will again follow EMCP 4 commands. However, if DC power to the CDVR was cycled while under the condition, then excitation lockout would result.
