Summary
Thrust faces of transmission and final drive planetary carriers can be damaged by foreign material or by the failure of a washer. This guideline covers two recommended procedures that can be used to repair damaged faces of planetary carriers for transmissions and planetary carriers for final drives. A semi-finished spacer can be used if welding alters the dimension of the spacer. After the welding process, the spacer can be machined to the correct dimension. A finished spacer may also be used to repair the thrust face. If you repair the thrust face with a finished spacer, complete precision machining and positioning before you weld the spacer in place.
This guideline contains the latest standards of engineering, which will help minimize owning and operating costs. A part can be expected to reach the next Planned Component Repair if the part meets the specifications in this guideline and if the part is used in the same application.
Do not operate or perform any lubrication, maintenance, or repair on this product until you have understood the operation, lubrication, maintenance, and repair information. If a part has met the specification in this guideline, the part can be expected to give normal performance until the next overhaul. The conditions apply when the part is used in the same application.
If this guideline shows a part that is not reusable, do not install the part. During reconditioning, correct any conditions that might have caused the original failure.

Standardized Parts Marking Procedure
Reference: Refer to Reuse And Salvage Guideline, SEBF8187, "Standardized Parts Marking Procedures" for additional information regarding marking procedures.
The code is a Cat standard and is used to record the history of a component. The code will identify the number of rebuilds and hours at the time of each rebuild. This information is important for any decision to reuse a component. The information should be considered when deciding whether to reuse a component. The information should be utilized for locating the cause of a failure.
NOTICE |
---|
Do not use a numbering stamp punches set to mark internal parts. The impact from striking the stamp will cause an abnormal stress riser. The added stress riser may cause the part to fail prematurely. |
The procedure for marking gears is a Cat standard. This code is helpful when the machine is sold into a different territory after the first rebuild. During an overhaul, the previous code of a part should never be removed.
Example 1
Illustration 4 | g03649157 |
Illustration 4 shows code (1-15). The first number (1) indicates that the component had been rebuilt once. The second number (15) indicates that there were 15,000 hours on the component at the time of rebuild.
Example 2
Illustration 5 | g03649151 |
Illustration 5 shows code (1-12) and code (2-10). Code (2-10) represents the information from the second rebuild. The first number (2) indicates that the component had been rebuilt twice. The second number (10) indicates that 10,000 hours accumulated on the component between the first and second rebuild.
Note: To obtain the total number of hours for the component in Illustration 5, add first and second rebuild hours. In this example the component has a total of 22,000 hours.
Measurement Techniques
NOTICE |
---|
Precise measurements shall be made when the component and measurement equipment are at |
A dial bore gauge is the preferred method of measuring bores but if a dial bore gauge is not available, an inside micrometer can be used.
Measurement Tooling include precision inside and outside diameter micrometers capable of measuring four decimal places in inches or three decimal places in millimeters. Measuring tools should be calibrated using gage blocks certified to a national standard such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
Ensure that several sample measurements are taken at different locations on the same feature. Measure diameters of internal bores in several places to identify tapered and or oval conditions.

- Secure the carrier to the horizontal table or to the vertical fixture. The bores of the planet shafts must be perpendicular to the cutting tool. Locate the boring bar off an existing undamaged bore. Refer to Illustration 15 and Illustration 16.
Note: Refer to page 12 in Reuse And Salvage Guidelines, SEBF8091, "Reuse and Salvage of Transmission Components", to determine the amount of wear that is permitted on the bores of planetary gear shafts.
- Remove up to
2.50 mm (0.10 inch) from the damaged thrust face. The dimension in maximum pocket width (A) in Table 5 is the maximum allowable pocket width for reuse. The dimension in minimum width (A) in Table 6 is the minimum allowable width for reuse. Do not use the carrier again, if the face cannot be finished within this dimension.Note: Do not remove material past the depth of
7.88 mm (0.310 inch) from damaged faces on a 3P-8165 Planetary Carrier. Refer to Illustration 17.Show/hide tableIllustration 18 g02378877 Pocket width (G) measured the full length.

Illustration 29 g02380817 Machining pocket width.
(G) Pocket width - Machine the spacers to produce gear pocket width (G). Refer to Table 5. The pocket faces must be perpendicular to the planet shaft bores. The total indicator reading must be within
0.05 mm (0.002 inch) . The surface texture must be at least2.5 µ meters (100 microinches) . Refer to Illustration 29. - Follow the "Balance Procedure for Transmission Carriers" section, to balance a transmission carrier. Balancing is not needed for final drive carrier. Refer to Table 8 and Illustration 39 through Illustration 41 for tolerances and balance hole locations.
Procedure for Finished Dimension Spacer
- Secure the carrier to the horizontal table or to the vertical fixture. The planet shaft bores must be perpendicular to the cutting tool. Use a bore that is not damaged to locate the boring bar. Refer to Illustration 15 and Illustration 16.
Refer to Illustration 17. - Repeat Step 1 and Step 2 for each thrust face that has wear or damage.

Illustration 31 g01193902 - Weld the spacers to the carrier in four places. Each weld must be 90 degrees from the previous weld. Use a UTP-8 Electrode. Refer to Illustration 31. Use approximately
6.5 mm (0.25 inch) long beads. Immediately peen each weld with a pneumatic needle scaler. Remove the clamp plates. - Remove any burrs that may have formed during the welding process. Check gear pocket width (G) which is shown in Table 5. The pocket faces must be perpendicular to the planet shaft bores. The total indicator reading must be measured to
0.05 mm (0.002 inch) . The surface texture must be at least2.5 µmeters (100 microinches) . - Refer to section "Balance Procedure for Transmission Carriers" to balance the transmission carriers. The final drive carriers do not require balancing. Refer to Table 8 and Illustration 39 through Illustration 41 for tolerances and balance hole locations.
Balance Procedure for Transmission Carriers
- Machine locator plate to a tight slip fit with the center diameter of the carrier. Then balance the locator plate. Refer to Illustration 32 through Illustration 34. Find a balancer shaft that can be used for the procedure. Machine a center bore in the locator plate with a tight slip fit for the balancer shaft, that is concentric with the smaller OD.

Illustration 38 g01193912 Apply putty at a point on the top of carrier to determine balance weight. - An unbalanced carrier will rotate on this stand. A balanced carrier will not rotate on this stand. If so, the carrier requires no additional inspection. If the carrier rotates, the heavier side will rotate to the bottom. Place putty on the carrier opposite the heavy side. Refer to Illustration 38.
- Rotate the carrier to a new position that is 90 degrees from the balanced position. Then, permit the carrier to rotate freely. A balanced carrier should not rotate. If the carrier rotates, apply more putty. Repeat this process until the carrier is balanced.
