Start By:

  1. Remove the torque converter. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Torque Converter - Remove".

  2. Remove the torque converter housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Torque Converter Housing - Remove".

  3. Remove the oil filter and base. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Oil Filter and Base (Power Train) - Remove and Install"


NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.



NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Use Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device in order to remove rotating clutch (1). The weight of rotating clutch (1) is approximately 27 kg (60 lb).

  2. Remove ring seals (2). Remove thrust bearing (3) and bearing (4).

  3. Turn over rotating clutch (1). Remove retaining ring (5) and plate (6).

  4. Remove retaining ring (7). Remove hub (8).

  5. Remove clutch discs and plates (9).

    Note: Note the quantity and the order of the clutch discs and plates for installation purposes.

  6. Remove thrust bearing (10).

  7. Use Tooling (B) and a suitable press in order to compress retainer (11) and spring (12). Remove retaining ring (13).

  8. Slowly release the tension and remove retainer (11) and spring (12).

  10. Remove ring seal (15) from piston (14).

  11. Remove bearing (16). Remove seal ring (17) and O-ring seal (18).

  12. Remove retaining ring (19), plate (20), thrust disc (21), and hub (22).

  14. Use Tooling (C) in order to retain balance piston (24).

  15. Remove screws (25).

  16. Slowly loosen Tooling (C). Remove Tooling (C). Remove balance piston (24).

  27. Remove bolts (40) and manifold assembly (41).

  28. Remove O-ring seals (42), spring (43), and sun gear (44).

  29. Remove thrust bearing (45).

  30. Remove discs and plates (46). Remove pins (47) and springs (48).

    Note: Note the quantity and the order of the discs and plates for installation purposes.

  31. Use two people in order to remove planetary carrier (49). The weight of planetary carrier (49) is approximately 16 kg (35 lb).

  32. Compress retaining ring (50). Remove planetary carrier (49) from ring gear (51).

    Note: Use suitable blocking in order to support the planetary carrier.

  33. Use Tooling (E) in order to remove bearing sleeve (52). Drive pin (53) into shaft (54) far enough to remove shaft (54). Remove pin (53) from shaft (54). Remove planetary gear (55).

  34. Remove thrust discs (56), and bearings (57) from planetary gear (55).

  35. Repeat Step 33 and Step 34 for the remaining planetary gears.

  36. Remove piston (58). Remove thrust disc (59). Remove thrust bearing (60).

  37. Remove seal ring (61) and seal ring (62) from piston (58).

  38. Use Tooling (F) in order to support the remaining clutches.

  39. Use Tooling (G) in order to reposition the transmission. The weight of the transmission is approximately 181 kg (400 lb). Disconnect harness assemblies (63) and remove the connecting hardware.

  40. Remove bolt (64) and the retainer. Remove speed sensor (65). Remove bolt (66) and the retainer. Remove speed sensor (67).

  41. Remove bolt (68), retainer (69), O-ring seal (70), and yoke (71).

  42. Remove O-ring seal (72). Repeat this step for the remaining speed sensor.

  44. Attach Tooling (H) and a suitable lifting device onto housing assembly (73). The weight of housing assembly (73) and planetary carrier (74) is approximately 39 kg (86 lb). Remove bolts (75). Remove housing assembly (73) and planetary carrier (74) as a unit.

  48. Use Tooling (K) and a suitable press in order to separate planetary carrier (74) from housing assembly (73).

    Note: Do not press against the end of the shaft.

  50. Remove retaining ring (81). Use Tooling (J), bearing cone (80), and a suitable press in order to remove bearing cup (82).

  52. Drive pin (85) into shaft (86) far enough to remove shaft (86). Remove pin (85) from shaft (86). Remove planetary gear (87).

  53. Remove thrust washers (88) and bearings (89) from planetary gear (87).

  54. Repeat Step 52 and Step 53 for the remaining planetary gears.

  60. Remove thrust bearing (102). Use Tooling (L) in order to remove planetary carrier (103). The weight of planetary carrier (103) is approximately 20 kg (44 lb).

  61. Position planetary carrier (103) onto suitable blocking. Remove retaining ring (104). Compress lock ring (105) and remove planetary carrier (103) from ring gear (106).

    Note: Use suitable blocking in order to support the planetary carrier.

  62. Drive pin (107) into shaft (108) far enough to remove shaft (108). Remove pin (107) from shaft (108). Remove planetary gear (109).

  63. Remove thrust washers (110) and bearing (111) from planetary gear (109).

  64. Repeat Step 62 and Step 63 for the remaining planetary gears.
