Personal injury or death can result from high voltage. When power generation equipment must be in operation to make tests and/or adjustments, high voltage and current are present. Improper test equipment can fail and present a high voltage shock/electrocution hazard to the user. Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when you are working in the cabinets. Make sure that the testing equipment is designed for and correctly operated for high voltage and current tests being made. |
To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, install the UPS in an indoor environment that is free of conductive contaminants. This equipment is intended only for installations in a location that is restricted to qualified personnel.
The UPS is subject to high leakage current. The UPS must be connected to an earth ground before the supply is connected.

High voltage is present when the enclosures of the UPS are open. The UPS should only be serviced by personnel that are qualified to work on equipment that contains high voltage.

Safety of Persons
The following sections contain safety precautions to observe as part of a general accident protection program.
The UPS must be installed in a room with restricted access. Only qualified personnel should have access to the room. A UPS has a battery as an internal power source. The power outlets may be energized even if the UPS is disconnected from the AC power source.
High voltage levels are present within the UPS. The UPS should be opened only by service personnel that are qualified. The UPS must have a proper ground connection to earth.

High voltage may be present. The power source must be disconnected before working on the equipment. Failure to disconnect the power source could result in injury or death. Verify that the equipment is not energized before performing any maintenance. This work must be performed by trained personnel with correct tools and procedures. Bodily contact with electrical potential will cause personal injury or death. |
After power is removed, wait for 5 minutes before the UPS is opened. This action allows the capacitors to discharge. Ensure that the capacitors are at a zero energy level before performing work.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) suitable to the work being performed must be worn when performing maintenance on the UPS.

High Leakage Current

The ground conductor must be connected first to avoid injury from high leakage current.
Leakage current in a UPS is typically caused by input filters that are designed to protect against voltage surges. Some leakage current is allowed to pass from the input to a ground path or wire that leads to earth ground on the system. If there is no earth ground connected on the system, there is no place for this leakage current to pass.
Battery Precautions
- Never burn the battery. The battery may explode if the battery is burned.
- Do not attempt to open the battery. The electrolyte is dangerous for the eyes and skin.
- Comply with all applicable regulations for the disposal of the battery.
- The battery must be replaced only by qualified personnel.

Safety of Equipment
General Precautions
- Never operate the UPS if the ambient temperature and relative humidity are higher than the levels that are specified in the documentation.
- The product must be installed on a surface that is not flammable such as concrete.
- Circuit breakers must be installed to protect the UPS. A breaker must be installed upstream of the UPS and downstream of the UPS. The breakers must be easy to access in an emergency.
- Never install the UPS near liquids or in a damp environment.
- Never permit a liquid or a foreign body to penetrate the inside of the UPS.
- Never block the grates that are ventilating the UPS.
- Never expose the UPS to direct sunlight or to a source of heat.
Storage
The maximum storage time of the UPS is limited due to the need to recharge the integrated battery. The failure of battery does not constitute a failure of the UPS. The UPS and the batteries are not integrated into each other even though both rely on each other. The UPS may be inoperable because the batteries fail. The installed batteries may not have the same operating conditions of the UPS. Consult the Battery manufacture for specifics of the batteries.
- If the UPS must be stored prior to installation, the storage area must be dry.
- The UPS must be stored in an area that is 35° ± 10°C (95° ± 18°F).
- Energize the UPS on a monthly basis for at least 24 hours when the UPS is stored for extended periods. This action charges the battery. If this action is not performed, the battery may be damaged beyond repair.
Installation and Operations
- The instructions for connecting the UPS that are contained in this manual must be followed in the order that is indicated.
- Ensure that the specifications that are on the rating plate correspond to the AC power system. Ensure that the ratings correspond to the total power consumption of all of the equipment that will be connected to the UPS.
The UPS is designed for normal operating conditions of altitude, ambient operating temperature, relative humidity, and ambient transport and storage. The UPS will operate correctly under normal conditions, but the battery may fail.
The following operating conditions may justify special measures of design or protection:
- Smoke, dust, or abrasive dust
- Humidity, vapor, salt air, bad weather, or dripping
- Dust and gas mixture that is explosive
- Extreme temperature variations
- Improper ventilation
- Conductive heat or radiant heat from other sources
- Cooling water that contains acid or impurities that could cause scale, silt, electrolysis, or corrosion of the parts that are exposed to the water
- Strong electromagnetic fields
- Levels of radiation that are higher than the natural environment
- Fungus, insects, or rodents
- Operating conditions of the battery
