The planetary transmission has six forward speeds and one reverse speed. REVERSE and NEUTRAL use only torque converter drive. At lower ground speeds, FIRST speed and SECOND speed use torque converter drive. As the ground speed increases in FIRST speed or in SECOND speed, the lockup clutch of the torque converter engages. This function provides FIRST speed or SECOND speed with direct drive. The torque converter is always in direct drive for speeds THIRD through SIXTH. However, there is a short period of torque converter drive when the clutches engage in the planetary transmission. This function provides smooth, automatic upshifting from THIRD through SIXTH and smooth, automatic downshifting from SIXTH through THIRD. Table 1 shows the clutches that are engaged for each speed.

The planetary transmission consists of two rotating clutches, three stationary clutches, and three planetary units. This configuration provides six forward speeds and one reverse speed. No. 1 clutch (1) and No. 2 clutch (2) are the rotating clutches.
The planetary transmission is bolted to the housing for the torque converter. Input shaft (6) for the planetary transmission is bolted to the retarder.

(7) Sensor (8) Sensor (9) Electronic control module |
Sensor (7) measures the input speed for the planetary transmission. The sensor sends the transmission input speed to the ECM (Electronic Control Module). Sensor (8) measures the output speed of the planetary transmission. The sensor sends the transmission output speed to the ECM (Electronic Control Module).
