Introduction
This Special Instruction will guide you through the installation and the configuration of the Acquisition Card.
Important Safety Information
Work safely. Most accidents that involve product operation, maintenance, and repair are caused by failure to observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognizing potentially hazardous situations before an accident occurs.
A person must be alert to potential hazards. This person should also have the necessary training, skills, and tools in order to perform these functions properly.
Safety precautions and warnings are provided in this instruction and on the product. If these hazard warnings are not heeded, bodily injury or death could occur to you or to other persons. Caterpillar cannot anticipate every possible circumstance that might involve a potential hazard.
Therefore, the warnings in this publication and the warnings that are on the product are not all inclusive. If a tool, a procedure, a work method or operating technique that is not specifically recommended by Caterpillar is used, you must ensure that it is safe for you and for other people to use.
You should ensure that the product will not be damaged or the product will be made unsafe by the operation, lubrication, maintenance or the repair procedures that are used.

Optional equipment |
The optional equipment is made up of the following components:
- one acquisition card
- one DB9/DB9 RS232 serial communication cable
- one installation and user manual for the acquisition card (this document)
Storage
The acquisition card should be stored in the following conditions:
- The card should remain in the original package.
- The card should remain in a dry place.
- The storage temperature range is −40° C (−40° F) to 70° C (158° F).
Recycling of Packing Material
Packing materials must be disposed of in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Function
The acquisition card is an optional part of the MulitSlot module.
The acquisition card acts as the interface between the I2C bus of the MultiSlot module and the UPS.
The acquisition card will use the proprietary protocol (U-Talk) for the UPS system or the basic protocol (dry contacts).
The acquisition card that is connected to the UPS acquires measurements, status information and alarms. The acquisition card that is installed in the UPS transmits the data to the I2C bus of the MultiSlot module.

The settings for the acquisition card must be modified in order to match the settings in Illustration 4. Before changing any of the DIP switches on the SA 1 block, the plastic sheet for protection must be removed.
Installation
Illustration 5 | g01996157 |
The acquisition card may be installed in any of the four slots in the MultiSlot module. No particular order is required. The DB9 J3 connector in the acquisition card is the only connector that may be used to connect the acquisition card to the MultiSlot module. Connector J4 is reserved for future applications.
Operation
Illustration 6 | g01996158 |
When the acquisition card is installed in the MultiSlot module, the following occurs:
- During UPS start-up, the green light (3) on the acquisition card flashes every second.
- If the communication cards are connected to the module, the green light (3) flashes sporadically during installation of the dialogue on the I2C bus of the MultiSlot module.
- In U-Talk mode, once dialogue with the UPS has been initialized, the green light (3) flashes when data is exchanged between the UPS and the acquisition card.
- When the acquisition card is in basic mode, the green light (3) flashes after every three seconds.
Troubleshooting
AC Power Problems
The green light (3) on the acquisition card remains off:
- Check the supply of power to the MultiSlot module.
- Check that the acquisition card is correctly installed and fully inserted in the module.
- Press the reset button (4) on the acquisition card.
Problem With Start-up
The green light (3) on the acquisition card remains on:
- Press the reset button (4) on the acquisition card.
Replacement of the Communication Cable
