Introduction
This special instruction provides information for replacing the bonded polycarbonate glass on top of the cab of certain excavators and mobile hydraulic power units.
Do not perform any procedure that is outlined in this publication, or order any parts until you understand this information.
Safety
Avoid prolonged skin contact with isopropyl alcohol. Avoid breathing the vapors in enclosed areas without adequate ventilation and do not smoke. Isopropyl alcohol is flammable. Do not use near open flame, welding operations, or around heated surfaces exceeding 482°C (900°F). |

Procedure for Replacing the Top Glass
Refer to Table 1 for a listing of the required parts for installing the top glass.
Refer to Table 2 for a listing of the required tools for installing the top glass.
Remove any components that may interfere with the removal of the top glass. This will aid in the removal and installation of the seals and the adhesives.
Removal of the Top Glass
- Remove guards or the visor, if equipped. For machines that are equipped with a sliding window, secure the front window in an intermediate position in order to gain better access to the top glass.
On machines with a fixed front window, remove the transparent seal between the top glass and the front window.
- Remove the front strikers from each side of the cab on each side of the front window.

Front Striker |
- Use Tooling (B) to initiate a cut at the front edge of the urethane adhesive that bonds the top glass to the cab.
- Insert Tooling (C) and attach Tooling (D). Make sure that you leave 2 mm (0.08 inch) to 3 mm (0.1 inch) (G) of the old seal (6) on the cab (7). Use Tooling (C) in order to cut the urethane adhesive. Pull Tooling (C) back and forth in order to cut the urethane.

(G) 2.5 ± 0.5 mm (0.01 ± 0.02 inch) (6) Old seal (7) Cab |
- Remove Tooling (D) and Tooling (C) after the urethane adhesive has been cut.
- Attach Tooling (F) to the top glass and remove the top glass from the cab. Use Tooling (B) in order to level the remaining urethane adhesive on the cab. The urethane surface should be consistent.
- Apply the appropriate primer and paint to any scratches that may have been caused by removing the top glass. This will prevent rust from starting. Rust will cause water leaks at the seals.
Installation of the Top Glass
- Use Tooling (A) to mask the transparent area of the glass. Slightly sand the black area of the glass with sandpaper for good adherence of the primer. Surfaces must be clean, dry and free from all traces of grease, oil and dust. Wipe the black area of the glass with 9U-6917 Adhesive Cleaner (2) and allow the adhesive cleaner to dry.
- Shake the can of 323-3872 Adhesive (5) vigorously until you hear the rattle of the metal ball inside the can. Spray the adhesive onto a brush or a felt pad. Apply a thin coat of adhesive on the black painted area of the glass. Do not apply at temperatures below 10° C (50° F) or above 35° C (95° F).
Note: Do not apply more than one coat of the adhesive. Care must be taken in order to ensure that one application of the adhesive thoroughly covers the black painted area of the top glass. Reseal the container immediately after use. Allow the adhesive to dry from 30 seconds to 30 minutes.
- Use Tooling (E) in order to apply an even layer of 175-2935 Polyurethane Sealant (4) around the edge of the top glass. Cutting a groove into the tip of the cartridge will help in the even application of the polyurethane sealant. Refer to Illustration 6. Apply the polyurethane sealant on the area that is shown in Illustration 5.
Note: Install the top glass within 15 minutes after the polyurethane sealant is applied.

- Install the new top glass onto the cab and adjust the lateral position. Press gently until top glass settles in place.
- Secure the top glass in position until adhesive cures. Drying time is 30 minutes minimum for bonding, and 24 hours for complete curing. The storage life of the polyurethane sealant is 9 months.
- From the outside of the top glass, apply 121-3910 Adhesive (3) between the top glass and the cab.
Note: Avoid slamming the door of the cab for 24 hours. The excessive air pressure in the cab could loosen the top glass. This could also cause potential water leaks.
- After complete drying, install a new seal on the one-piece fixed window and reinstall the strikers.
