Failures of the Engine Vision on Marine Applications{1900, 7490}

Usage:

3208 01Z
Marine Engine: ALL

Introduction

The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.

Problem

Two failure modes have been identified with the Engine Vision.

First Failure Mode

There have been known failures of the 189-4750 Monitor Electronic Control Module , the 212-7481 Monitor Electronic Control Module , and the 289-6327 Monitor Electronic Control Module . Failures include the following symptoms: blank screen, poor illumination, improper function of the configuration screen, internal exposure to moisture and vertical lines and horizontal lines across the screen

Second Failure Mode

The Engine Vision must be flashed to a newer software in order to resolve an issue, but detailed flashing instructions are not available.

Solution

First Solution

If the Engine Vision experiences problems with any of the symptoms that are mentioned in ""First Failure Mode" " a service request must be submitted. The service request must reference this Technical Information Bulletin (TIB). Also, the service request must include a list of the symptoms that are being experienced by the Engine Vision. Contact your Technical Communicator in order to submit a service request.

Second Solution

If flashing the Engine Vision with new software is required, use the instructions that are located below.

The following items are required in order to flash the Engine Vision with new software.

  • Version 2006B of Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) or an earlier version

  • 225-0774 System Communication Module Gp

  • 163-3974 Power Cable

  • 163-3973 Cable As

  • A cable with a Deutsch nine-pin connector is used to connect to the Cat Data Link (CDL).

  • Engine Vision flash files

  • Engine Vision configuration file

Note: 225-0774 System Communication Module Gp is also known as the Engine Vision Interface Module (EVIM).

Note: A 24 VDC power supply with an inrush current capacity of at least 25 amperes is needed if the Engine Vision is not mounted during the flashing procedure.

Caterpillar Communications Adapter II

  1. Flash the new software in the following order: ENVISION.FLS, E1.fls, E2.fls and Engine Vision configuration file

The flash files can be found on the Marine PowerNet Website.

Note: The files must be flashed in the correct order and without any interruptions during flashing. Turn off any power saving options if a laptop computer is used.

Flashing Procedure

  1. Connect the Engine Vision to a 12 VDC or 24 VDC power supply.

  1. Connect the Engine Vision Interface Module (EVIM) to the Engine Vision.

  1. Connect the 12 VDC or 24 VDC power supply to the EVIM.

  1. Connect the CDL connection on the EVIM to the CDL connection on the Engine Vision.

  1. Connect the Caterpillar Communications Adapter II to CDL.

  1. Connect the Caterpillar Communications Adapter II to the computer.

  1. Allow Engine Vision to boot up to the "Main Screen" as the equipment is now turned on.

  1. Touch the "CAT" symbol on the upper part of the main screen. Then, touch the "BPS" button at the bottom of the next screen.

Note: The EVIM and Engine Vision can now talk to each other at the same baud rate.

  1. Connect with Winflash on the computer or a laptop computer.

  1. Flash the "ENVISION.FLS" file. After the flash is completed wait until the Engine Vision has rebooted and Engine Vision has returned to the "Main Screen".

  1. Flash the "E1.fls" file. After the flash is completed wait until the Engine Vision has rebooted and Engine Vision has returned to the "Main Screen".

  1. Flash the "E2.fls" file. After the flash is completed wait until the Engine Vision has rebooted and Engine Vision has returned to the "Main Screen".

  1. Flash the Engine Vision configuration file. After the flash is completed wait until the Engine Vision has rebooted and Engine Vision has returned to the "Main Screen".

The flashing of the Engine Vision is now completed.

Note: Contact your Technical Communicator for further assistance. Also, contact the you Technical Communicator in order to report a new failure mode.
