Engine control switch in the OFF/RESET position |
The Engine Control Switch (ECS) is a rotary switch that has four positions:
- OFF/RESET
- AUTO
- MANUAL START
- COOLDOWN/STOP
Note: Only the indicators on the status control module are reset when the ECS is turned to the OFF/RESET position. Diagnostic codes must be cleared with the "Diagnostic Reset" switch which is located on the remote control panel.
OFF/RESET - When the engine control switch is turned to this position (12 o'clock), the fault indicators on the status control module are reset and the engine shuts down immediately. The power is removed from the engine control module and the status control module. This method is not recommended for normal stopping.
AUTO - When the engine control switch is in this position (3 o'clock), the system is configured for remote operation. When the remote start/stop initiate contact closes, the engine will start. If the cycle crank feature is utilized, the engine may cycle before starting. When the remote start/stop initiate contact opens, the engine will shut down. If the cooldown cycle is programmed, the engine will operate for the cooldown period before the engine shuts down.
MANUAL START - When the engine control switch is turned to this position (6 o'clock), the engine will start. If the cycle crank feature is utilized, the engine may cycle before starting. The engine will continue to operate when the switch is in this position. However, if a setpoint for a shutdown is exceeded, the engine will shut down.
COOLDOWN/STOP - This is the preferred method for normal stopping. When the engine control switch is turned to this position (9 o'clock), the engine will continue to operate until a programmable cooldown cycle has elapsed. The cooldown cycle can be programmed for a 0 to 30 minute period. The default setting is five minutes.
Engines that are equipped with electronic governors will run at low idle until the oil pressure has exceeded the set point for low oil pressure. When the set point for low oil pressure has been exceeded, the 2301A relay for speed control will close and the engine will accelerate to rated speed.
Engines with hydramechanical governors will accelerate to the speed setting immediately after crank termination.
Sequence of Operation (Normal Start/Stop)
The Status Control Module (SCM) will check for the following conditions after receiving a start signal:
- No emergency stop signal
- No faults
- Properly operating sensors
- ECS signals OK
- Zero engine RPM
- Properly functioning SCM
- SCM not in programming mode
The SCM will not begin the sequence for starting if any of the above conditions are not met. When the above conditions are met, the SCM will energize the following relays: Starting Motor Relay (SMR), Run Relay (RR), Fuel Control Relay (FCR), 2301A relay (if applicable) and ignition relay. The SCM will crank the engine, or cycle crank the engine, until the engine is running. If the engine fails to start within the crank time, an overcrank fault will occur. If a fault condition occurs while cranking, the SCM will lock out the cranking sequence, display the diagnostic code and/or illuminate the appropriate indicator.
When the engine starts and the crank termination speed is achieved, the SCM will de-energize the SMR. The SCM will then energize the Crank Termination Relay (CTR). When the correct oil pressure is reached, the SCM will energize the 2301A relay, if applicable.
The engine will remain running while the run signal is active and the operating conditions remain normal. The SCM will monitor for faults and abnormal conditions while the LCD sequentially displays the following conditions for two seconds:
- Engine oil pressure
- Coolant temperature
- RPM
- Service hours
- DC voltage
When the run signal is deactivated and the cool down feature is activated, the engine will continue to run for the cool down period. If the cool down feature is not activated or if the SCM receives a off/reset signal, the RR is de-energized. The fuel solenoid will then be de-energized for the Energized To Run (ETR) fuel system or energized for the Energized To Shutoff (ETS) fuel system.
If the run signal returns before the RPM is zero the SCM will revert to the running state. If the run signal returns and zero RPM is reached, the SCM will de-energize the CTR and the SCM will be ready for an instant restart. If there is not a restart within two seconds the SCM will de-energize the FCR.
Sequence of Operation (Fault Conditions)
If a fault occurs before or after the engine starts, the SCM will display the diagnostic code and/or illuminate the appropriate indicator. The SCM will remain in this state until it receives a reset signal.
If a fault occurs before the engine is running the following actions will be taken by the SCM: lockout of starting motor, disabled fuel supply, de-energized the RR circuit and energized Engine Failure Relay (ENFR).
The SCM will cause the following conditions if a fault occurs while the engine is running:
- De-energized ETS fuel system or energized ETS fuel system
- De-energized Ignition Shutoff Relay (ISR) for overspeed faults and emergency stop faults
- De-energized ISR for diagnostic codes 01, 04 and 06
- De-energized ISR if all six indicators are illuminated
- De-energized ISR if the engine does not shutdown within five seconds of a fault
- Re-energized ISR within 15 seconds of zero RPM and de-energized ignition system
