PM3516 Power Modules Caterpillar

Product Description

Usage:

3516C KEN
The power module is equipped with the following components: engine, generator, control systems and fuel tank.

Intended Use

The power module is a complete self-contained unit for generating electrical power.

The power module is transportable. The power module can be towed to any location for the generation of electrical power. The power module can be utilized for prime power generation or standby power generation.

Engine

3500 Generator Set Engines are electronically controlled diesel engines. The engines have electronic fuel injectors. The engines can be equipped with either jacket water aftercooling or separate circuit aftercooling. The engine is offered in an 8 cylinder engine, a 12 cylinder engine, and a 16 cylinder engine.

Engine efficiency and engine performance depend on adherence to proper operation and maintenance recommendations. Use the recommended fuels, lubrication oils, and coolant. Pay special attention to the air cleaner, to the fuel system, to the lubrication system, and to the cooling system maintenance. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Maintenance Interval Schedule" for more information on maintenance items.

Generator

The SR4B brushless generator can be used with the following loads: mixed loads of motors and lights, SCR-controlled equipment, computer centers, installations of communications and petroleum drilling applications.

SR4B generators are utilized in three-phase full-wave excitation and regulation. The generators are either four pole or six pole designs with six lead configurations or 12 lead configurations. The generators can produce electrical power in either 50 Hz or 60 Hz applications.

Power Module Enclosure

Basic Container

The enclosure for the power module is a shipping container that is mounted to an undercarriage chassis. The container meets the following standards and regulations:

  • ISO/TC 104 Requirements for cargo containers

  • ANSI/ MH5.1 Basic requirements for cargo containers

  • ANSI/MH5.1.1 Requirements for closed van containers

  • UIC Code 592-1 International union of railway

The load cable access door is located outside of the power module. This access door is for access to the bus bars in order to connect the load leads.

Vertical Discharge Partition Panel

Vertical discharge partition panel

The vertical discharge partition panel is located between the radiators. The panel directs hot air from the radiator and engine exhaust through an opening in the roof. This panel helps direct the hot air away from the surrounding area of the power module.

Fire Extinguishers

Fire extinguishers and fire suppression systems are available as standard equipment.

Louvers

Louver

Louvers are installed in the power module in order to receive fresh air. The louvers are sized in order to meet the inlet air supply that is required for the power module. The louvers allow fresh air to enter the power module that is needed for the engine air inlet and for radiator cooling during full load.

There are louvers that can be opened and closed manually. There are also louvers that can be opened or closed automatically. The louvers that are operated manually require the operator to open the louvers before the operation of the power module. The louvers that are operated manually require the operator to close the louvers after the operation of the power module. Automatic louvers are opened and closed by 24 V electric actuators. The electric actuators will open the louvers when the engine is started. The electric actuators will close the louvers when the engine is stopped.

Fuel Storage/Delivery System

Fuel tank assembly

Fuel tank

A 4732 L (1250 US gal) fuel tank is mounted in the front of the power module. The fuel tank can supply fuel for the engine for approximately 10 hours of operation at full continuous load. The fuel tank is constructed of 6.3500 mm (0.250 inch) steel. Fuel tanks that are a larger capacity are available as an option.

Fuel Transfer System

A fuel transfer system is available as an option for the power module. During the operation of the power module, the fuel transfer system will automatically fill the fuel tank from a fuel reservoir. The pump for the fuel transfer system is driven by an electric motor. Strainers are on the suction and the discharge in order to protect the fuel transfer pump from debris. The fuel transfer system is equipped with safety features to prevent the fuel tank from being overfilled.

Fuel/Water Separator

Dual Fuel/water separators

Two fuel/water separators are mounted on the fuel tank. The fuel/water separators are connected in parallel. The fuel/water separators provide primary filtration for the fuel for the engine.

Some units are equipped with a triple fuel/water separator as seen in illustration 8

Battery disconnect switch

The batteries for the power module are mounted in racks on the floor along one side of the generator set against the wall. The batteries provide power for the engine and for 24 V interior lighting. The batteries are connected to a battery charger and to the alternator for charging. A battery disconnect switch is mounted to the generator. The battery disconnect switch is used to prevent the engine from being started while the power module is not being used. The battery disconnect switch is used to prevent any battery drain while the power module is not being used. The battery disconnect switch is also used while the power module is being transported.

Note: Do not use the battery disconnect switch to start and stop the generator set.

Auxiliary AC Power Distribution

Circuit breakers are available for 120/240 V auxiliary power distribution.

Interior Lighting

Switches for interior lights

There are 24 V interior lights that are mounted in the engine area and in the operator control area inside the power module. The lights are wired to a 0-60 minute timer switch. The timer switch is mounted to the wall beside the door. These lights are powered from the batteries.

Incandescent lighting and fluorescent lighting that is 120 V is available as an option.

Outlets

Bus bar assembly

The bus bars are three-phase fully rated neutral bus bars that are made with the National Electrical Manufactures Association (NEMA) standard hole pattern. The bus bars are for the connection of the load cables. The bus bars are also for the connection of the generator cables. The bus bars are sized for full load capacity of the generator set. The ground bus is for a ground connection from the switchgear to the generator. The ground bus is the ground connection from the switchgear to the container. The ground bus is also a connection for the power module to earth ground. The bus bars are accessible from outside of the power module at the load cable access door.
