Fuel System Filter and Water Separator - Replace
The fuel system filter/water separator element is located in the engine compartment on the left side.
- Open the engine access door.

(2) Locking Ring - Open the drain on the water separator bowl (1). Allow the water and fuel to drain into a suitable container.
- Support the water separator element and rotate the locking ring (2) counterclockwise. Remove the locking ring.
- Remove the water separator bowl from the bottom of the fuel filter/water separator element.
Note: The water separator bowl is reusable. Do not discard the water separator bowl.
- Inspect the O-ring seal of the water separator bowl for damage. Replace the O-ring seal, if necessary.
- Lubricate the O-ring seal with clean diesel fuel or lubricate the O-ring seal with motor oil. Place the seal in the water separator bowl.
- Spin the water separator bowl onto the new filter element by hand until the fuel filter/water separator is snug. Do not use tools to tighten the fuel filter/water separator element to the bowl.
- Clean the filter mounting base.
- Install the new element. Rotate the locking ring clockwise to fasten the filter to the mounting base.
- To activate the electric fuel priming pump, turn the engine start switch to the START position and release the start switch. This process will activate the relay for the electric fuel priming pump which allows power to reach the electric fuel priming pump. The electrically operated fuel pump will fill the water separator element with fuel.
