This Special Instruction provides information for the installation of GRADE-related firmware on the EC520 Controller through the Web interface or winflash.

The latest GRADE-related firmware provides the most up-to-date capability of the GRADE system. The GRADE-related firmware may be found in SISweb based on a part number search or a serial number search.

SISweb will be packaged in an FL2 or ZIP file extension that will show release notes briefly describing the file contents. FL2 extension files may be flashed using Caterpillar WinFlash, but the .S and .SG6 files can also be extracted to be used in the EC520 Controller Web interface.

Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you have read the information and you understand the information.

Accidental engine starting can cause injury or death to personnel.

To prevent accidental engine starting, turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and place a do not operate tag at the ignition switch location.

Climbing equipment may be required to access this service point. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Mounting and Dismounting" topic for safety information.


Before starting this installation, in addition to the normal safety precautions taken whereas performing maintenance on heavy machinery, the following lockout/tagout procedure is recommended:

  1. Move the machine to a smooth, level location, and away from other working machines and personnel.

  2. Lower the implements to the ground.

  3. Stop the engine.

  4. Engage the parking brake for the machine.

  5. Place the disconnect switch in the OFF position.

Installation Procedure

The GRADE-related firmware can be installed in two ways as fallows:

  • Using web Interface

  • Using Winflash

Installing GRADE Firmware Through Web Interface

Perform the following procedure to install GRADE-related firmware using Web Interface:

  1. Download the flash file from SISweb. Once the file has been downloaded to a folder location, use a standard file extraction tool to extract the files from the ZIP or FL2 file.

  2. Right-clicking the file will often show the file extraction option available when a file extraction tool is installed on a PC. Right click and select "Extract All...".

  3. Allow all files to be extracted from the folder.

  4. When the file extraction process is completed, ensure that the critical firmware data files are located in the "DataImages" folder. Refer to Illustration 5 for the example of "5406728V00.ZIP" in the "5406728" folder including "5406728V00.SG6" in the "DataImages" subfolder.

  5. Access the Web interface.

    The "Web Interface" may be accessed in several ways. The two most common methods are through an onboard TD520 GRADE display with a "Web Interface" application icon or through accessing the Service Dashboard in Caterpillar Electronic Technician (CAT ET) where a GRADE option is provided to access the web interface on the PC.

  6. The "MACHINE SUMMARY" screen will appear after login to the Web Interface. Refer to Illustration 7.

  7. Select the "Onboard Devices" under the "MONITOR" menu and press the lock icon to secure access to change parameters on the EC520 controller.

    When the lock icon is pressed, the option to send an "Unlock Request" will appear. Send the request to receive approval to change parameters. Refer to Illustration 8.

  8. Once access has been approved to change parameters, the drop-down arrow can be pressed to see if there are any available firmware versions already on the EC520 controller for applying to a device. If there are no "Available Firmware" versions loaded already, press the "Add Firmware" button to upload a firmware file to the EC520 controller. Refer to Illustration 9.

  9. The SG6 extension (or S extension) file can be selected by accessing a USB with the file on the USB. Choose a file to upload to select the SG6 or S extension. Refer to Illustration 10.

  10. The file will upload to the EC520 controller for a period. A popup will appear showing the progress of the upload. Refer to Illustration 11.

  11. Once the upload has completed, the file will appear under the "Available Firmware" for the System ECM. The box can be checked to select the firmware and applied to the device. Check the box to apply the firmware to the device. Select "Apply Firm...". Refer to Illustration 12.

  12. Similar to the Upload notification, the system will show "Update In Progress" with an estimated percentage indicating the firmware update progress. Refer to Illustration 13.

  13. After finishing the software update for the EC520 controller, the EC520 controller must power cycle. A notification of a "Lost Connection" may appear for a brief period as the system reconnects after the power cycle. Refer to Illustration 14.

  14. Because of the EC520 controller power cycle, the Web interface will require password re-entry for any further activities in the Web interface. Enter user name and password for further activities in the Web interface. Refer to Illustration 15.

    The firmware on the EC520 controller is updated at this point but when the GRADE system also uses a TD520 GRADE display with the GRADE application it is also necessary to update the GRADE application on the TD520 GRADE display.

    The GRADE application is easy to update. When the GRADE application is first entered after an EC520 controller firmware update, the system self-identifies that an update is required to make the TD520 GRADE display and the EC520 controller match and updates as part of the application startup.

  15. After accessing the GRADE application, press "Download" when prompted to upgrade the TD520 GRADE display. Refer to Illustration 16 and Illustration 17. The system will require that this be run twice so when the system kicks the user back to the Android operating screen the first time, simply repress the GRADE application.

Installing GRADE Firmware Through Winflash

Perform the following procedure to install GRADE-related firmware using Winflash:

  1. Download the flash file from SISweb. Once the file has been downloaded to a folder location, use a standard file extraction tool to extract the files from the ZIP or FL2 file. Refer to Steps 2, through 4 of above section.

  2. Grade Control System (EC520 Controller) does not appear in the Winflash list, when the ports are not configured on the Network Manager.

    1. Port 8 must be configured for the Grade Control System (EC520) controller to be visible in Winflash.

  3. Direct Ethernet cable to service port.

    2. Access Product Link Service Dashboard.

    3. Access Product Link Service Dashboard, by selecting "Settings >> Network Configuration".

  4. Unlock the network configuration by clicking on the banner at the top right.

  5. Configure Port 8 Settings.

    • VLAN = 40

    • Device Type = Cat GRADE Auto Detect

  6. Save Port Configuration and allow the system to reboot. Reboot takes a few minutes.

  7. Grade Control System is now visible in Winflash.

    1. The FL2 File from SIS web and be used to directly flash the EC520 controller through the ethernet connection.

  8. Select the FL2 file from folder location for the Grade Control System Grade Slope Control.

    1. FL2 files include integrated release notes which should be shown for the file selected.

  9. With the FL2 files selected, the software will be flashed to the EC520 Controller when "Begin Flash" is pressed.

    Note: If the Web Interface is active and an unlocked connection maintained through the Web Interface, the software update will not succeed.

    Note: If the EC520 is not a blank controller and does not have any licenses associated, the software update will not succeed.

  10. The WinFlash progress bar will indicate the progress of the flashing process and when finished will have successfully updated the software.
