Diagnostic Trouble Codes
J1939 Code  Code Description
(code descriptions may vary)
Conditions Present  Response
523590-16  Parked Regeneration Timed Out  Regeneration process is not completed within approximately 45 minutes due to low DPF temperature.
Coolant temperature is 50° C (122° F) or more during parked regeneration.
None
523589-17  Low Coolant Temperature in Parked Regeneration  Engine coolant temperature stays below 50° C (122°F) for 25 minutes or more during parked regeneration.  None

Troubleshooting Test Steps  Values  Results

1. Active Codes and Logged Codes

A. Establish communication between Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) and the Electronic Control Module (ECM).

B. Download the "Product Status Report" from the engine ECM before performing any troubleshooting or clearing diagnostic trouble codes.

Troubleshoot any active codes related to coolant temperature before continuing with this procedure.

Diagnostic code

Result: There are no active codes.

Proceed to Test Step 2.

Result: A diagnostic trouble code is active or logged.

Troubleshoot any active or logged codes before continuing with this procedure.

2. Temperature Sensor and/or the Circuit

A. Check the reading of the temperature sensor on Cat ET. The DOC inlet temperature should rise steadily as the engine is warmed. Use a heat gun on uninsulated section of DOC to confirm temperature in ET.

Note: For the 523590-16, refer to Troubleshooting, Sensor Signal (Analog, Passive) – Test to check that the 3 aftertreatment temperatures sensors are operating properly. If no issues are found, contact your Cat dealer Technical Communicator (TC). For further assistance, your TC can contact the Dealer Solution Network.

Note: For the 523589-17 check that the coolant temperature sensor is operating correctly.

Aftertreatment Temperature Sensor

Result: The temperature sensor is working properly.

Proceed to Test Step 3.

Result: The temperature sensor is not working properly

Repair: Troubleshoot the circuit and the coolant temperature sensor. Refer to Troubleshooting, Sensor Signal (Analog, Passive) - Test.

If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 3.

3. Water Temperature Regulator

A. Pressure-test the cooling system. Refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting for the correct procedure.

B. Check that the seating surfaces the radiator cap are clean and undamaged.

C. Check operation of the water temperature regulator. Refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, "Water Temperature Regulator - Test"

Temperature Regulator

Result:The water temperature regulator is operating properly.

Proceed to Test Step 5.

Result: The water temperature regulator is not operating properly.

Repair : Clean the components and/or replace the components.

If the procedure did not correct the issue, contact your Cat dealer Technical Communicator (TC). For further assistance, your TC can confer with the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
