Start By:

  1. Remove the torque divider. See Disassembly and Assembly, "Torque Divider - Remove".


NOTICE

When a torque converter or divider has a failure, the complete oil system for the torque converter, torque divider and transmission must be throughly cleaned. Any foreign material which is not removed from the oil system for the torque converter will move through the hydraulic system for the transmission.

  1. Use tool (A) to remove snap ring (1) from the shaft.

  2. Fasten an appropriate lifting device to planetary carrier (2). Remove the planetary carrier. The weight of the carrier is 23 kg (51 lb).

  3. Remove spacer (4) and snap ring (3) from the planetary carrier.

  4. Use a hammer and a punch to push the pins into shafts (9).

  5. Remove shafts (9), washers (6) and (7), and gears (5).

  6. Remove bearings (8) from the gear.

  7. Remove the pins from shafts (9) and remove the seal on the carrier.

  8. Remove the bolt, retainer (10), and the O-ring seal.

  9. Remove yoke (11) from the housing.

  10. Remove bolts (12) and retainer (13) from the torque divider.

  11. Remove O-ring seals (14) and (15) from the retainer.

  12. Remove lip type seal (16) from the retainer.

  13. Move out shaft assembly (17). Fasten an appropriate lifting device. Fasten the lifting device to the shaft assembly and remove the assembly. The weight of the shaft assembly is 23 kg (51 lb).

  14. Remove seal ring (18) from the seal carrier.

  15. Put the shaft assembly in position in a press, and remove seal carrier (19) and bearing (20).

  16. Remove bearing race (21) from the shaft, if necessary.

  17. Put the torque divider in position, as shown.

  18. Remove the bolts that hold case (23) to the torque divider.

  19. Install two 1/2 inch - 13 NC forcing screws (22) in the cover. Install tooling (B) and remove case (23). The weight of the case is 104 kg (229 lb).

  20. Remove two O-ring seals (24) from the support and the seal from the torque converter housing.

  21. Install two 3/8 inch - 16 NC forcing screws (25) in support (26). Remove support (26) from the torque divider.

    Note: Do not remove plate (27) unless you will remove the support or the plate.

  22. Remove plate (27) from the support.

  23. Remove bolts (28) that hold flange assembly (29).

  24. Install tooling (B) on the carrier. Install two 3/8 inch - 16 NC forcing screws (25). Remove the flange assembly. The weight of the flange assembly is 54 kg (119 lb).

  25. Remove the bolts that hold sleeve (30) in place. Install two 1/2 inch - 13 NC bolts (31) in the threaded holes. Remove sleeve (30).

  26. Install two 1/2 inch - 13 NC forcing screws, and remove flange assembly (29) from the impeller.

  27. Remove bearing race (32) from the flange.

  28. Install two 1/2 inch - 13 NC forcing screws, and remove impeller (33) from the carrier assembly.

  29. Remove seal ring (34) from the seal carrier.

  30. Use tool (A) to remove snap ring (35) from the carrier.

  31. Remove carrier (36) from the stator.

  32. Use tool (A) to remove retaining ring (37).

  33. Remove inner race (38). The springs and the rollers may fall.

    Note: Note the position of the springs and rollers.

  35. Remove springs (40) and rollers (41).

  36. Turn over the stator by 180 degrees. Remove retaining ring (42). Use tool (A).

  37. Remove plate (43) from the stator.

  38. Use tool (A) to remove retainer ring (44) from the stator. Heat the stator to a maximum temperature of 135 °C (275 °F). Maintain the temperature for 15 minutes. Push cam (45) out of the stator.

  39. Remove the bearing, the race, and retainer assembly (46) from carrier (36).

  40. Push the pin that holds seal carrier (47) to the carrier out of the carrier. Install tooling (C) on the carrier, as shown. Remove seal carrier (47) and bearing cone (48).

  41. Remove the bearing, the race, and retainer assembly (49).

    Note: Support flange assembly (50) from the bottom in order to prevent the assembly from falling when snap ring (51) is removed.

  42. Remove snap ring (51). Use tool (A). Remove spacer (52).

  43. Attach tool (B) to the housing and separate the housing from the flange assembly.

  44. Remove O-ring seal (53) from flange assembly (50).

  45. Push down pins (54) with a hammer and with a punch. Remove ring (55) and the ring gear from the flange assembly.

  46. If bearings (56) are worn or damaged, use tool (E) to remove the bearings.

    Note: Rotate the housing 90 degrees. When you drive the hub past the seal carrier, the seal carrier will fall. Put wood blocks under the seal carrier in order to prevent the seal carrier from being damaged.

  47. Remove large snap ring (57). Use tool (A). Remove small snap ring (58). Use tool (A).

  48. Use tooling (C) to remove turbine hub (59) and the turbine from the housing.

  49. Attach an appropriate lifting device and a chain to tool (B). Remove housing (60) from turbine hub (59) and the turbine.

  53. Rotate housing 180 degrees and use tooling (C) to remove sleeve (65) and bearing (66) from housing (60).
