Diesel Exhaust Fluid Tank - Remove and Install

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that Diesel Emission Fluid (DEF) for the system are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Drain the coolant. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant (ELC) - Change" for the correct draining and filling procedures.

  2. If necessary. drain the diesel exhaust fluid into a suitable container.

  3. Remove bolts (1) and cover (2).

    Note: Apply identification marks on the hose assemblies and DEF lines for assembly purposes.

  4. Disconnect harness assembly (5) and two harness assemblies (6).

  5. Disconnect hose assemblies (3) and DEF lines (4).

  6. The weight of ladder assembly and DEF tank assembly (7) is approximately 64 kg (140 lb). Attach a suitable lifting device to ladder assembly and DEF tank assembly (7).

  7. Remove bolts (8). Remove top bolts (9) and loosen bottom bolts (9).

  8. Remove ladder assembly and DEF tank assembly (7) and place on to suitable cribbing with the ladder facing down.

  9. Remove screws (10) the washers and the nuts.

  10. Loosen and remove straps (14). Remove DEF tank assembly (11).

  11. Remove the spill guard.

  12. If necessary, Remove bolts (12) and the washers and remove DEF tank mounting (13).

  13. Remove cap, lanyard, and screen (16).

  14. Remove screws (18), manifold assembly (15) and the seal from DEF tank (17).

  15. Remove drain plug (20).

  16. Remove filter assembly (19) from manifold assembly (15).

Installation Procedure

  1. Install DEF tank (17) in the reverse order of removal.

    1. Tighten drain plug (20) to a torque of 5 to 7 N·m (40 to 60 lb in).

    2. Apply Tooling (A) to the threads of straps (17). Tighten straps (17) to a torque of 4.5 ± 0.7 N·m (40 ± 6.0 lb in).

    3. Tighten screws (10) to a torque of 6 ± 1 N·m (53 ± 9 lb in).

    4. Ensure DEF lines (4) are fully engaged. Pull back the connectors to confirm connection.
