Torque Converter Lockup Clutch Pressure - Test

Usage:

D6N GB6

------ WARNING! ------

Hot hydraulic oil under high pressure can remain in the components of the hydraulic system or the power train system after the engine has been stopped. The uncontrolled release of the hydraulic oil can cause sudden machine movement and can also result in the following conditions:

  • Burns

  • The penetration of body tissue

  • Other personal injury

  • Death

If hydraulic oil penetrates body tissue, the injury must be treated immediately by a doctor who is familiar with this type of injury. Use a board or a piece of cardboard to check for a hydraulic oil leak. Make sure that all of the attachments have been lowered to the ground and that all trapped pressure has been released from the hydraulic system and the power train system. Also, make sure that the hydraulic oil is cool before the removal of any components or lines. Remove the hydraulic oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from not engaging the parking brake.

Transmission engagement alone will not prevent machine from rolling when the engine is stopped.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Test Preparation - Torque Converter Lockup Clutch

  1. Move the machine to a smooth horizontal location.

  2. Permit only one operator on the machine. Keep all other personnel away from the machine or in the sight of the operator.

  3. Place the steering control lever in the NEUTRAL position.

  4. Engage the parking brake.

  5. Lower the attachments to the ground.

  6. Stop the engine.

  7. Turn the key to the ON position, but do not start the engine.

  8. Verify that the implement shutoff control is in the Unlocked position .

  9. Move the control levers through the full range of travel several times. This procedure should relieve any pressure that may be present in the implement hydraulic system.

  10. Make sure that the pressure in the entire hydraulic system has been released.

  11. Turn the key to the OFF position.

  12. Open the access panel inside the cab.

  16. Attach the other Tooling (A) to pressure tap (P1).

Test Procedure - Torque Converter Lockup Clutch

  1. Start the engine.

  2. Warm the transmission oil to a minimum of 30° C (86° F).

  3. Use Cat ET to perform the torque converter lockup clutch test. Select the "Diagnostics" option from the Cat ET menu.

  4. Select “Diagnostic Tests” from the drop-down menu.

    Illustration 7g06007409

  5. Select the "Transmission Hydraulic Control Clutch Pressure Test" from the selection menu. Follow the instructions that are provided.

Note: There will be no need to manually raise the engine speed because the test will automatically set the engine speed during this test.

  6. The pressures are manually checked using Tooling (A) during the "Test in Progress" portion of the test.

  7. The delta pressure between main relief (P1) and lock up clutch (LUC) should be 195 ± 50 kPa (28 ± 7 psi).
