Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you read this information and you understand this information.

Installation of the Stub Shaft onto the Engine

The stub shaft is mounted onto the vibration damper on the engine. Use the following procedure to mount the stub shaft. Do not install the stub shaft over the existing bolts.

  1. Remove bolts (2) that secure guard (1) to the engine.

    (3) 8S-4757 Bolts

  1. Remove bolts (3) that are 180 degrees from each other.

    (4) Guide stud 1 - 14 by 10 inch

  1. Install two guide studs (4) into the holes that are located 180 degrees from each other.

  1. Remove the remaining bolts (3) .

  1. Remove the paint from the surface of the damper. The stub shaft cannot be installed correctly without removing the paint.

    The paint must be removed from the edges of the damper and from the surface of the damper.

    (5) Index mark on the flange of the stub shaft

  1. Locate index mark (5) that is located on the flange of the stub shaft.

    (6) Index mark on the damper

  1. Locate index mark (6) that is located on the vibration damper.

    Correct alignment of the index marks

  1. Line up index mark (5) and index mark (6) .

    (7) Stub shaft

  1. Use guide studs (4) in order to install stub shaft (7) .

    Ensure that index marks (5) and index mark (6) are aligned.

  1. Ensure that stub shaft (7) is seated correctly in the damper.

  1. Apply a molybdenum disulfide grease under the shoulder of the bolt heads and to the threads before assembly.

  1. Install four 9F-8122 Bolts with 5P-8250 Washers .

    Do not tighten the bolts.

  1. Remove guide studs (4) .

  1. Install the remaining two 9F-8122 Bolts with 5P-8250 Washers .

    Do not tighten the bolts.

  1. Tighten the 9F-8122 Bolts .

    Refer to Illustration 15 for the tightening sequence of the bolts.

    Torque ... 1150 ± 150 N·m (850 ± 110 lb ft)

  1. Measure the run out of stub shaft (8) .

    129-2288 Shaft

    Maximum runout ... 0.254 mm (0.0100 inch)

  1. Install vibration damper guard (1) .

    Bolts for 8N-9639 Damper Guard Gp and 197-9052 Damper Guard Gp

    Torque ... 15 ± 3 N·m (133 ± 27 lb in)

    Bolts for 7W-6669 Damper Guard Gp

    Torque ... 7 ± 2 N·m (62 ± 18 lb in)
