Introduction

The following procedure is for adjusting the ride control activation speed with Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET).

The software program that will be used for this test procedure is the Cat ET. The Cat ET is a software program that can be used on an IBM-compatible personal computer.

Reference: For more information about the use of Cat ET, refer to Troubleshooting, "Using Caterpillar Electronic Technician to Determine Diagnostic Codes" for the machine that is being serviced.

Test Preparation

  1. Park the machine on a smooth, level surface.

  2. Shift the transmission direction control switch to the NEUTRAL position.

  3. Lower the bucket or the work tool to the ground.

  4. Engage the parking brake.

  5. Place blocks in front of the wheels and behind the wheels.

  6. Allow only authorized personnel on the machine. Keep unauthorized personnel off the machine and in clear sight of the operator.

  7. Shut off the engine.

Note: This calibration procedure can be performed without a running engine.

  8. Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the ON position.

Procedure for Adjusting the Ride Control Activation Speed in Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET)

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement.

Sudden movement of the machine can cause injury to persons on or near the machine.

Prevent possible injury by performing the procedure that follows before working on the machine.

  1. Connect the laptop computer to the service connector in the cab. The service connector is located on the right side instrument panel above the key start switch.

Note: The Cat ET will allow the activation speed for the ride control to be adjusted in 0.1 km/h (0.06 mph) increments. The engagement speed may be adjusted between 1.6 km/h (1 mph) to 32 km/h (20 mph). The factory setting for the activation speed (forward) is 9.7 km/h (6 mph). The factory setting for the activation speed (reverse) is 3.2 km/h (2 mph).

Note: The deactivation speed will be 1 km/h (0.62 mph) less than the activation speed.

  2. Open the software program Cat ET. Select the "Implement ECM" from the "ECM Selector" menu.

  3. Select the "Service" menu item from the toolbar. Select the "Configuration" menu item.

Note: Activation of the software for the ride control without installation of the hardware for the ride control will introduce faults for the ride control switch and the solenoid.

  4. Highlight the option for the ride control activation speed on the configuration screen. Click on the "Change" button in the bottom left of the screen. Enter the new value for the setting of the engagement speed. Click the "OK" button.

  5. Click the "Yes" button.

  6. The value of the engagement speed for the ride control has been changed.

  7. Close the Cat ET. Shut down the laptop computer. Disconnect the computer from the service connector in the cab.
