Description of Change: A new routing and improved hoses are now available for the machines listed. The new routing of the steering line will address an objectionable cab noise while articulating the machine.
Adaptable To: The new routing configuration is accomplished by redesign of the HMU return line to route directly to the hydraulic tank instead of the steering valve.
The modification procedure for replacing and rerouting the HMU hoses is included below.

Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil. Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system. Make sure all of the work tools have been lowered to the ground, and the oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. |
NOTICE |
---|
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
- Prepare machine for service. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Machine Preparation for Troubleshooting" for the machine that is being serviced for more details.
- Park the machine on a smooth, level surface. Move away from other operating machines and away from personnel. Lower the implements to the ground. Turn the engine start switch to the OFF position.
- Permit only one operator on the machine. Keep other personnel away from the machine or in sight of the operator.
- Lower the bucket and/or work tool to the ground.
Note: When the bucket and/or work tool is raised for testing or adjusting, make sure that the work tool is supported correctly. Also, make sure that the work tool is in the full DUMP position.
- Engage the parking brake. Put blocks in front of the wheels and behind the wheels.
- Install steering frame lock in the LOCKED position so the machine cannot articulate.
- Release system pressure. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "System Pressure - Release" for the machine that is being serviced before performing the following procedure.
- Remove Hose As. (A) from the 349-6093 Metering Pump Gp (E).
