High Loads Require Additional Oil Capacity {1318,1214,1215}

Usage:

3208 Turbocharged Generator Set Engines ( 30A)

Two 3208 Turbocharged Generator Sets became available in February 1986: a 150 kW, 60 Hz for prime power, and a 120 kW, 50 Hz for prime power. If either engine in these two applications is to be operated above 60% of the rated kW for more than 50 hours continuously, additional oil capacity is recommended. A minimum of 9.5 liters (10 U.S. qt) additional oil is required to prevent oxidation of the oil and possible sticking of the piston rings during the stated change intervals.

How To Increase The Capacity

The most economical method of increasing the oil capacity is to install an external-type bypass oil filter. These filter kits are used on many on-highway truck engines and are available in the U.S. at most heavy-duty truck dealers.

One typical brand is Luber-finer. Their smallest model is the 500C, Catalog Item 2141, which allows an additional quantity of 10 liters (10.5 U.S. qt). This size mounts upright and includes a canister, filter, inlet and outlet connections, and a bracket for mounting on any flat, vertical support. List price is U.S. $228.38 (subject to change without notice). Their next larger model is the 750C, Catalog Item 5234, which allows 12 liters (12.5 U.S. qt) more oil. This model is more widely available and can be mounted in any position. List price is U.S. $242.00 (subject to change without notice).

Mount the external filter to the engine oil filter base with a bracket. Connect the filter to the engine at the locations for the supply and return lines for the kit. See illustration.

NOTE: The reason for adding the filter kit is to obtain additional oil capacity, not more filtration. Thus, the filter element is unnecessary and can be thrown away at the first oil change.

Servicing Engines With The External Filter

Be sure to drain the external filter at every oil change. This must be done through the separate drain on the filter.

NOTICE

Always refill any external oil filter separately. If this is not done and the engine is started, it will pump at least half the oil out of the oil pan, which has a capacity of 19 liters (20 U.S. qt), in order to fill the external filter. This can damage the engine. Also, do NOT extend the oil change interval as is usually done when these kits are added. The purpose of the additional oil is to reduce the concentration of oxidation in the oil.
