A CID 1273 FMI 09 is recorded when the Scraper Transmission ECM receives incorrect information from the Tractor Transmission/Chassis ECM over the Cat Datalink.

Possible causes of this diagnostic code are:

  • Incorrect software, or hardware, Part Numbers.

  • Poor machine harness electrical connections.r

  • A Cat Datalink circuit shorted to ground.

  • A Cat Datalink circuit shorted to +Battery.

  • Open Cat Datalink circuit.

Note: Other related diagnostic codes may cause this diagnostic code. Check for other related diagnostic codes.

Note: Poor connections are often the cause of a problem in electrical circuits. Before performing this procedure, inspect all the machine harnesses and connectors involved in the circuit. Make sure to verify that all of the connections in the circuit are clean, secure, and in good condition. Correct any problems found with any of the connections. Verify the diagnostic code CID 1273 FMI 09 is still active, before continuing with this procedure.

Note: This test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore all those created diagnostic codes now, but clear those codes after the cause for the original diagnostic code has been corrected.

Test Step 1. VERIFY HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE PART NUMBERS.

  1. Verify the following "Part Number"s:

    • Scraper Transmission ECM Software.

    • Tractor/Chassis ECM Software.

    • Scraper Transmission ECM.

    • Tractor/Chassis ECM.

Note: For the correct machine configuration, consult the Business Unit that produces the product.

Expected Result:

All "Part Number"s are correct.

Results:

  • YES - All "Part Number"s are correct. Go to Test Step 8.

  • NO - A "Part Number" is not correct.

    Repair: One of the modules may have the wrong part number and/or the software configuration is not correct. See Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Flash Program".

    Go to Test Step 8

Test Step 2. CHECK FOR ADDITIONAL RELATED DIAGNOSTIC CODES.

  1. Ensure that all electronic control modules that use the Cat Datalink are connected.

  1. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.

  1. Acknowledge any active diagnostic codes that are currently displayed on the message center.

  1. Verify that no other related, and active, diagnostic codes are present.

Expected Result:

No other related, and active, diagnostic codes are present.

Results:

  • YES - No other related active diagnostic codes are present, but CID 1273 FMI 09 is still active. Go to test step 4.

  • NO - Other related active diagnostic codes are present, and CID 1273 FMI 09 is still active. Go to test step 3.

Test Step 3. CLEAR ALL ACTIVE RELATED DIAGNOSTIC CODES.

  1. Perform all required Test Procedures to clear all other related, active diagnostic codes.

Expected Result:

All related active diagnostic codes are cleared, and CID 1273 FMI 09 is no longer active.

Results:

  • YES - All other related active diagnostic codes are cleared, and CID 1273 FMI 09 is no longer active.

    Repair: The diagnostic codes do not exist at this time. Return the machine to normal operations.

    STOP

  • NO - All other related active diagnostic codes are cleared, but CID 1273 FMI 09 is still active. Go to test step 4.

Test Step 4. INSPECT THE HARNESS CONNECTIONS.

  1. Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.

  1. Inspect the Cat Datalink harness connectors between the Scraper Transmission ECM and the Tractor/Chassis ECM.

  1. Make sure that the connectors are clean and tight.

  1. Check the mating of the connector.

  1. Check the wires at the connector.

  1. Check each wire for nicks and/or signs of abrasion in the insulation.

  1. Check for moisture at the connector.

  1. Check for dirty contacts and/or corroded contacts.

  1. Check each pin and check each socket.

Expected Result:

The machine harness connectors are tight and free of corrosion.

Results:

  • YES - The machine harness connectors are tight and free of corrosion. Go to Test Step 5.

  • NO - The machine harness connectors require repair.

    Repair: Repair or replace the harness.

    Go to Test Step 8

Test Step 5. CHECK FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

  1. The disconnect switch remains in the OFF position.

  1. Disconnect the J1 ECM harness connectors from both the Scraper Transmission ECM, and the Tractor/Chassis ECM.

  1. At the Scraper Transmission ECM J1 harness connector: Measure resistance from contact J1-10 to all other contacts on the connector. Repeat the contact J1-10 resistance measurement, but to frame ground this time.

  1. At the Scraper Transmission ECM J1 harness connector: Measure resistance from contact J1-20 to all other contacts on the connector. Repeat the contact J1-20 resistance measurement, but to frame ground this time.

Expected Result:

All resistances are more than 5000 ohms.

Results:

  • YES - All resistances are more than 5000 ohms. The Cat Datalink circuits are correct. Go to test step 6.

  • NO - A resistance measured less than 5000 ohms. The Cat Datalink harness has failed.

    Repair: There is a short to ground in the Cat Datalink harness. Repair or replace the harness.

    Go to Test Step 8

Test Step 6. CHECK FOR A SHORT TO +BATTERY.

  1. The key start switch and the disconnect switch remain in the OFF position.

  1. At the Scraper Transmission ECM J1 harness connector: Measure resistance from contact J1-10 to all other contacts in the J1 connector. Make sure, specially, to check the J1-10 contact resistance to the +Battery contacts J1-31, J1-39, and J1-46.

  1. At the Scraper Transmission ECM J1 harness connector: Measure resistance from contact J1-20 to all other contacts in the J1 connector. Make sure, specially, to check the J1-20 contact resistance to the +Battery contacts J1-31, J1-39, and J1-46.

Expected Result:

All resistances are more than 5000 ohms.

Results:

  • YES - All resistances are more than 5000 ohms. The Cat Datalink circuits are correct. Go to Test Step 7.

  • NO - A resistance measured less than 5000 ohms. The Cat Datalink harness has failed.

    Repair: There is a short to +Battery in the Cat Datalink harness. Repair or replace the harness.

    Go to Test Step 8

Test Step 7. CHECK FOR AN OPEN HARNESS.

  1. The disconnect switch and the key start switch remain in the OFF position.

  1. The J1 Scraper Transmission ECM harness connector, and the J1 Tractor Transmission/Chassis ECM harness connector, remain disconnected.

  1. Check the continuity of the Cat Datalink circuits in the machine harness.

  1. Perform the following measurements:

    • Measure resistance from connector contact J1-10 (wire 893-GN) of the Transmission ECM to contact J1-10 (wire 893-GN) on the Tractor/Chassis ECM.

    • Measure resistance from connector contact J1-20 (wire 892-GN) of the Transmission ECM to contact J1-20 (wire 892-GN) on the Tractor/Chassis ECM.

Expected Result:

All resistances are less than 5 ohms.

Results:

  • YES - All resistances are less than 5 ohms. The Cat Datalink circuit is correct. Go to test step 8.

  • NO - A resistance is more than 5 ohms. The Cat Datalink harness has failed.

    Repair: Repair or replace the machine harness.

    Go to Test Step 8

Test Step 8. CHECK IF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE REMAINS.

  1. Reconnect all harness connectors. Make sure that the connectors are clean, and fully seated. Observe that the clips on each connector are securely fastened.

  1. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.

  1. Clear all inactive diagnostic codes.

  1. Operate the machine.

  1. Check status of the CID 1273 FMI 09 diagnostic code

Expected Result:

The CID 1273 FMI 09 diagnostic code is no longer active.

Results:

  • YES - The CID 1273 FMI 09 code is no longer active, and does not exist at this time. Return machine to normal operation.STOP

  • NO - The CID 1273 FMI 09 code is still active. The cause for the problem has not been corrected.

    Repair: If you have not inspected the harness connectors in a previous Test Step, do that now. Clean the contacts of the harness connectors. Check the wires for damage to the insulation caused by excessive heat, battery acid, or chafing.Perform a 45 N (10 lb.) pull test on each of the wires that are associated with the sensor circuit.Perform a "wiggle test" on the sensor circuit of the machine wiring harness, using the Caterpillar Electronic Technician service tool. The "wiggle test" can be used to detect open or shorted connections in the machine wiring harness.Reconnect all harness connectors. Make sure that the connectors are fully seated. Observe that the clips for each connector are securely fastened. Perform Test Step 8 again. If the problems not found, and the original code is still active, the Scraper Engine ECM, or the Scraper Transmission ECM, may have failed.Prior to replacing an ECM, always contact your Dealership Technical Communicator for possible consultation with Caterpillar, or with the Dealer Solutions Network. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time. If the ECM needs to be replaced, see Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".
